Getting Ashore

You don't go ashore at Moffen Island — Norwegian law prohibits any vessel or person from entering within 300 metres of the island during the entire cruise season.

Viewing from the Ship

  • 1
Stay on deckYour ship will slow to a drift or hold position just outside the 300 m exclusion zone. Move to the outer decks or observation lounge for the best views.
  • 2
Follow the expedition teamExpedition leaders will announce the approach over the PA. They'll point out the walrus colony, identify bird species, and explain the 80th parallel crossing.
  • 3
Dress for Arctic conditionsEven in July, wind chill on an open deck at 80°N is severe. Layer up with thermals, a windproof shell, warm gloves, and a beanie covering your ears.

💡 Pro move: Drones are prohibited in all Svalbard protected areas. Do not launch one — fines are substantial.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Wildlife

Walrus Colony Viewing

The main event: dozens to hundreds of Atlantic walruses haul out on the gravel spit. From outside the exclusion zone, binoculars reveal the colony in detail — tusks, social jostling, and the occasional plunge into the water.

80th Parallel Crossing

Crossing 80° North is a milestone for Arctic travelers. Most expedition ships mark it with a deck gathering, hot drinks, and a certificate. On clear days the ice-capped mountains of Spitsbergen frame the moment perfectly.

Seabird Watching

Moffen is a nesting site for Sabine's Gulls, Arctic Terns, and Common Eiders. Thousands of birds circle the island during summer, making it excellent for birding from the ship's rail.

Insider Tips

  • 🔭
Bring serious binoculars. 8×42 or 10×42 minimum — at 300+ m the walruses look like brown blobs to the naked eye. A 300–600 mm camera lens is ideal for photography.
  • 🧊
Dress for brutal wind chill. Temperatures near the 80th parallel hover around 0–5°C even in July, and wind off the ice water makes it feel colder. Ear coverage is non-negotiable.
  • 🔇
Keep quiet on deck. Sound carries far over Arctic water. Sudden noise can spook the walrus colony, triggering a stampede that can injure calves. Whisper-volume on the outer rails.
  • 🌫️
Fog is common. Arctic sea fog can shroud the island entirely. This is part of the experience — listen to your expedition leader's updates and stay patient.
  • 🚁
No drones. Drones are banned in all Svalbard nature reserves. Enforcement is taken seriously and fines are high.
