Insider Tips

  • 🎨
Chagall windows: Look for the brilliant blue windows in the north aisle of the Cathedral — Marc Chagall designed them in 1960. They're the most photographed detail in the building.
  • 🍽
Real Quiche Lorraine has no cheese. In Metz you're at the source — egg, crème fraîche, smoked lardons, buttery pastry. If it has cheese, it's not the original.
  • 🐉
Spot the Graoully dragon — Metz's mythical beast is all over the city. Look for the giant effigy on Rue Taison in the pedestrian shopping zone.
  • 🛍
Sunday closures apply: Most shops and the Covered Market close on Sundays, but the Cathedral, major museums, cafes, and restaurants remain open.
  • 💳
Cards accepted everywhere in the city centre. Keep a small amount of cash for bakeries, the market, or public restrooms.
