History

Carlsten Fortress Guided Tour

Built in 1658 by King Carl X Gustav, Carlsten Fortress looms over the island from its granite peak. Guided tours weave through dungeons, ramparts, the prison chapel, and the legend of Lasse-Maja — Sweden's most notorious thief, imprisoned here for 26 years (1813–1839). Views from the tower are the best on the west coast.

Insider Tips

  • 💳
Sweden is cashless. You will not need Swedish Krona cash. Every café, shop, ferry, and attraction accepts Visa/Mastercard. AmEx is less common. Leave SEK cash on the ship.
  • 👟
Wear sturdy shoes. Marstrandsön is hilly with 17th-century cobblestones and slippery granite rock paths. Heels or flip-flops will make the fortress climb miserable.
  • 🧥
Dress in layers. The Swedish west coast can swing from sunshine to sea-spray in an hour. A windproof jacket is essential even in summer.
  • July = regatta crowds. If your call falls during GKSS Match Cup Sweden (early July), the harbour fills with racing yachts and spectators — spectacular to watch, but restaurants get very busy. Book ahead.
  • 🦐
Order the räkmacka. The open-faced shrimp sandwich is the definitive Swedish west coast lunch — fresh hand-peeled shrimp on toast with mayo, dill, and egg. Found at most harbour cafés for 120–180 SEK.
