Majuro, Marshall Islands

Getting Ashore

Most cruise ships anchor in Majuro Lagoon and tender passengers to the Uliga Dock, which puts you steps from the town center.

Getting Ashore in Majuro

  • 1
Tender to Uliga DockMost ships anchor in the calm lagoon and run tenders to Uliga Dock, near the Marshall Islands Resort. Allow 20-30 minutes for the tender process.
  • 2
Expedition ships at DelapSmaller or expedition vessels may dock directly at Delap Dock. It's a 20-30 minute walk or a very cheap shared taxi ride ($1-2 USD) to the Uliga town center.
  • 3
Shared taxis for getting aroundWave down a shared taxi on the main road — they run the full length of the D-U-D area and cost $1-3 USD per person. Flag one early if heading to Laura Beach (30 miles west, ~$50-80 round trip).

💡 Pro move: The Marshall Islands are devoutly religious. If your ship calls on a Sunday, most shops and markets will be closed, though hotel restaurants and pre-booked excursions still operate.

Insider Tips

  • 💵
Cash is king. US dollars are the currency. Bring small bills ($1, $5, $10) — taxis, local crafts, and small shops rarely accept cards.
  • 👗
Dress modestly in town. Marshallese culture is conservative. Women should cover knees and shoulders; bikinis are for private resorts or Eneko Island only, not the town streets.
  • 🕌
Sunday sailings are quiet. If your ship calls on Sunday, nearly all shops and markets will be closed. Stick to hotel restaurants and pre-booked excursions.
  • 🌡️
Climate change is visible here. Majuro averages just 2 meters above sea level. Sea walls, eroded shorelines, and community conversations about relocation are a sobering real-world context for your visit.
  • 🗣️
Say Yokwe. Pronounced 'Yawk-way,' it means hello, love, and goodbye in Marshallese. A warm greeting goes a long way with the famously friendly locals.
