Insider Tips

  • 🌡️
Summer heat is real. Dec–Feb temperatures often exceed 40°C (104°F). Carry water, wear a hat, and seek shade during the midday peak.
  • 🪰
Bush flies in warm months. The infamous 'Aussie salute' (waving flies from your face) is real here. A hat with a fly-net or insect repellent with DEET helps.
  • 💳
Cash vs card. Cards (Visa/Mastercard) are accepted in most cafes and shops. Carry some small cash for the Bakery and market stalls.
  • 🦘
Wildlife spotting tip. Look up into the red gum trees at Mary Ann Reserve — wild koalas are frequently seen napping in the branches, especially in the morning.
  • Dark sky stargazing. The Murray River corridor is Australia's only International Dark Sky Reserve. If you're overnighting, Shell Hill Reserve has telescope pads for spectacular stargazing.
