Insider Tips

  • 📱
Download Grab before you arrive. It's the Uber of Southeast Asia and saves all taxi fare negotiation. Works perfectly in Makassar and is far cheaper than haggling with port taxis.
  • 👗
Dress modestly. Makassar is a predominantly Muslim city. Shoulders and knees covered is the respectful standard — and will make you feel less like a tourist target.
  • 💵
Carry Rupiah cash. Street food, entry fees, and small shops are cash-only. ATMs are in the terminal and at major banks; withdraw before heading out.
  • 🚫
Tana Toraja is not a day trip. It's 8–9 hours each way. Anyone offering a 'Toraja day tour' from Makassar is not being honest about the logistics. Skip it.
  • 🌡️
Hot and humid all year. Carry a large water bottle, wear sunscreen, and bring a compact umbrella — afternoon tropical downpours are common.
