  • 1
Tender (large ships)Ships anchor in the bay and run tender boats to the town quay on the Riva. Expect 10–15 min crossing. Check tender cut-off times carefully — the last boat is usually 30 min before all-aboard.
  • 2
Docked (small ships)Small coastal cruisers and expedition vessels berth directly at the Osejava pier on the east side of the harbour, a 5-minute walk to Kačić Square.
  • 3
Getting aroundMakarska town is entirely walkable. Taxis wait near the harbour for Biokovo excursions. Local buses from the main bus station (10 min walk uphill) serve neighbouring villages on the Riviera.

Insider Tips

  • 💶
Euros everywhere. Croatia adopted the euro in 2023. Cards are widely accepted in restaurants and shops; carry a little cash for beach chairs, small bakeries and market stalls.
  • 👟
Mind the stone. Old Town streets are smooth polished limestone — slippery even when dry. Wear rubber-soled sandals or trainers. Pebble beaches reward water shoes and save your feet from sea urchins.
  • 🏔️
Biokovo needs a plan. The mountain road is narrow; you need a guided excursion, taxi or rental car. Book Skywalk tickets in advance — numbers are capped and it sells out in summer.
  • Tender timing is tight. If your ship tenders, note the last boat time and build in a 20-minute buffer. Makarska has no late taxis back to a tender quay if you miss it.
  • 🐙
Order peka early. Traditional Dalmatian peka (octopus or lamb slow-cooked under an ember dome) must be ordered at least 2 hours ahead. Tell a konoba on the Kalalarga when you arrive, then sightsee and return.
