One of Norway's great surprises: a booming island of 500 people, a colony of 200,000 puffins nesting in Atlantic scree, and a mountain summit with views stretching to the mainland glaciers.
Lovund has no cruise terminal — ships anchor offshore and tender passengers to the village marina.
💡 Pro move: The puffin colony (Lundeura) is only present mid-April through late August. Outside those months, the birds are at sea — still a scenic island, but the headline attraction won't be there.
Lovund is a tender-only port; all cruise ships anchor offshore and transfer passengers by small boat to the village marina.
| Cruise Line | Typical Berth / Arrival | Dock or Tender |
|---|---|---|
| Expedition lines (Hurtigruten, Havila, Ponant, Scenic) | Lovund Gjestehavn / express-boat quay📍 | Tendered |
| All other cruise lines | Lovund Gjestehavn📍 | Tendered |
Lovund's draws are almost entirely free and self-guided — the puffin scree and mountain summit are the main events.
Follow the signposted Lundvollveien from the harbor through the village and past the cemetery to the viewing platform above the rocky scree (about 15–20 min; the final stretch is unpaved and can be muddy). Around 200,000 Atlantic puffins nest here mid-April through late August. Dusk is the best time — birds swirl back from the sea in massive clouds.
