Rental car (recommended)Rental offices are at Kahului Airport (OGG), a short taxi or rideshare ride from the pier. Book well in advance. Drive Route 30 (Honoapiilani Hwy) 27 miles southwest to Kaanapali/Kapalua (~45–60 min, traffic permitting).

Shore excursion or rideshareCruise line excursions guarantee your return time. Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) is available but expensive ($60–$100+ each way). Public Maui Bus is slow and not practical for cruise schedules.

Lahaina town — current statusThe historic Front Street and harbor area were destroyed in the August 2023 wildfire. The town core remains closed for rebuilding. The Lahaina Cannery Mall area and restaurants north of the burn zone (Aloha Mixed Plate, Mala Ocean Tavern) are open. Do not enter restricted recovery areas.
💡 Pro move: Allow at least 2.5–3 hours to return from West Maui to the Kahului pier. The single-lane highway can back up badly; accidents or brush fires cause major delays.

A partially submerged volcanic crater 3 miles off the south coast, with crystal-clear water and 150+ fish species. One of Hawaii's premier snorkel and dive sites. Boat tours depart from Maalaea Harbor, about 9 miles (15 min) southwest of the Kahului pier.
The Au'au Channel between Maui, Lana'i, and Moloka'i is one of the world's best humpback whale nurseries. Boat tours from Maalaea Harbor offer almost guaranteed sightings during season.
Kaanapali Beach is consistently ranked among America's best — four miles of golden sand backed by luxury resorts. Kapalua Bay is a sheltered crescent perfect for snorkeling with sea turtles. Both are a 45–60 min drive from the pier.

The Kaanapali Beachfront Walk is the standout stroll — a paved 2-mile oceanfront path linking resorts and beaches with zero effort.

A paved oceanfront path runs the length of Kaanapali Beach, threading between the sand and the resort towers. Walk north from Whalers Village to Black Rock (Pu'u Keka'a) for excellent snorkeling at the point. Sunset brings a free torch-lighting and cliff-dive ceremony at the Sheraton.
A stunning trail from Kapalua Bay to D.T. Fleming Beach, crossing lava fields and sand dunes with sweeping ocean views. Kapalua Bay itself is one of Maui's best snorkel spots for sea turtles and reef fish — bring a mask.

Lahaina town is still rebuilding. The historic Front Street core and harbor area remain closed to the public following the August 2023 wildfire. Do not enter restricted areas. Support local businesses in the open parts of West Maui.

Traffic can be brutal. The single-lane Honoapiilani Highway (Rt 30) connecting West Maui to Kahului can back up for hours after accidents. Leave West Maui at least 2.5–3 hrs before your all-aboard time.

Reef-safe sunscreen is the law. Hawaii bans sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate. Buy compliant sunscreen in Maui or bring one labeled reef-safe before you arrive.

Whale season is December–April. If your cruise visits Maui in winter, don't skip a whale watch — the Au'au Channel is one of the world's top humpback nurseries.

Tip generously in West Maui. Many resort workers lost their homes in the Lahaina fire but returned to work. Tipping well is one of the most direct ways to support the community's recovery.
