Walk to townFrom the pier end it's about 1 mile to the main street (Ala Malama Avenue). The walk is flat and paved but fully exposed — bring water and sun protection. Many cruise lines arrange a shuttle van.

Transportation in portThere is no Uber or Lyft on Molokai. Rental cars must be booked well in advance through local operators. Pre-arrange a taxi for sights outside town (Palaau State Park, west end beaches). Your ship's excursion desk is often the easiest option.

Walk the full length of Kaunakakai's main street from the harbor end to the far shops. Stop at Kanemitsu Bakery, browse the tackle shop, and soak in a mid-20th-century plantation town that has resisted every chain store and developer.
Head west along Kamehameha V Highway from the wharf entrance to reach Kapuaiwa Coconut Grove and Church Row. Flat road walk — take the shaded side where possible and stay hydrated. Return by taxi or retrace.

No Uber, no Lyft. Molokai has zero rideshare. Pre-book a taxi or your ship's excursions for anything beyond walking distance. Rental cars sell out months ahead.

Sunday closures are real. If your ship calls on Sunday, most of Kaunakakai town shuts completely — including grocery stores, most restaurants, and many shops.

Reef-safe sunscreen only. Hawaii law bans oxybenzone and octinoxate. Bring mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) or buy it locally.

Kanemitsu Bakery is the local institution — open daily for pastries and local breakfast. Their famous hot bread with cream cheese runs after 7:30 PM (if your ship stays late, it's a must).

Respect the culture. Molokai residents actively limit mass tourism. Don't photograph locals without permission, obey 'Kapu' signs, and avoid honking if you rent a car — it's considered very rude here.
