Two continents, one shore day. Istanbul stacks 2,500 years of empire — Byzantine domes, Ottoman minarets, spice-scented bazaars, and a stunning Bosphorus approach — right outside the world's first underground cruise terminal.
Galataport opened in 2021 and features the world's first underground cruise terminal — you clear customs underground and emerge directly onto the Karaköy waterfront promenade.
💡 Pro move: The T1 tram is your single most useful tool — it connects Karaköy, Eminönü, Sultanahmet, and the Grand Bazaar in one direct line. Keep your Istanbulkart or contactless payment ready; inspectors check.
All cruise ships dock at Galataport, the modern underground terminal on the Karaköy waterfront — no tendering, no transfers.

Istanbul's top sights cluster tightly in Sultanahmet — Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, and the Basilica Cistern are all within a 15-minute walk of each other, making independent exploration very rewarding.
The two defining monuments of Istanbul face each other across Sultanahmet Square. Hagia Sophia (a working mosque since 2020) charges tourists €25 to access the upper gallery, where you get breathtaking views of the nave and Byzantine mosaics; women must cover their hair. The Blue Mosque remains free — it closes ~90 min per prayer time, and Fridays 12:30–2:30 PM. Arrive at Hagia Sophia by 9 AM to beat the afternoon crowds.
Find Sultanahmet guided tours →The Ottoman sultans' imperial palace overlooks the Bosphorus at the tip of the Old City. The Harem section is a separate ticket and worth it — gilded rooms, tiled corridors, and courtyard gardens. A combined Palace + Harem ticket runs about 2,000 TL (~$55). Closed Tuesdays. The palace is within easy walking distance of Hagia Sophia.
Find Topkapi Palace tours →The Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı) is one of the world's oldest covered markets — 60 streets, 4,000+ shops. Entry is free; bargaining is expected (start at 50% of asking price). The Egyptian Spice Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı) near Eminönü is smaller, more atmospheric, and ideal for Turkish tea, lokum, and spices. Both close Sundays — plan accordingly.
Find bazaar walking tours →A 90-minute public ferry from Eminönü runs up the Bosphorus past Ottoman yalı mansions, Rumeli Fortress, and the two suspension bridges — remarkable value at just an Istanbulkart swipe. Private boat tours depart from Karaköy, right outside Galataport, and offer more flexibility. Don't miss the ferry from Karaköy to Kadıköy on the Asian side — a quick 20-minute crossing to a completely different city vibe.
Find Bosphorus boat tours →The 6th-century Byzantine underground cistern (Yerebatan Sarnıcı) was fully renovated and reopened in 2022 with improved lighting and accessibility. Its 336 illuminated marble columns reflected in shallow water are spectacular. Located 500 m from Hagia Sophia in Sultanahmet; entry is around 600 TL.
Find Sultanahmet combo tours →Turkey's premier modern art museum opened a stunning new building right inside Galataport in 2023 — walk off the ship and you're there (400 TL, closed Mondays). Then head uphill 15 minutes to Galata Tower (650 TL), the medieval stone tower with 360° panoramic views over the Golden Horn and Bosphorus. Combine both for a culture-and-views half-day without leaving the Karaköy neighborhood.
Find Galata area tours →Sultanahmet is completely walkable from the T1 tram stop, while Karaköy and Galata offer a rewarding stroll right off the ship.
The classic Old City loop. Take the T1 tram to Sultanahmet stop, then walk the UNESCO core: Hagia Sophia first (arrive early), across to the Blue Mosque, down past the ancient Hippodrome obelisks, loop to the Basilica Cistern, and finish at the Grand Bazaar gate on Divan Yolu. Return by tram or explore the Spice Bazaar at Eminönü.
Walk straight off the ship along the Galataport promenade, past the Istanbul Modern Museum, to the Galata Bridge. Explore the vendors underneath the bridge (fish sandwiches, tea), then climb 15 minutes up through the Galata neighborhood to the tower for panoramic views. Plenty of specialty coffee shops and baklava on the way back.
