Getting Ashore

Galataport opened in 2021 and features the world's first underground cruise terminal — you clear customs underground and emerge directly onto the Karaköy waterfront promenade.

From Ship to Shore

  • 1
Galataport underground terminalDisembark via the ship's gangway into the 29,000 sqm underground facility. Passport control, baggage, and ship services all happen below ground. You exit via escalator onto the open waterfront promenade — it's seamless and fast.
  • 2
Tram to Sultanahmet (Old City)Walk 2 minutes from the terminal exit to Karaköy T1 tram stop. Take the T1 tram toward Bağcılar — get off at Sultanahmet (4 stops, ~10 min). Buy an Istanbulkart (reloadable, ~18 TL/ride) at the Biletmatik machine or use contactless card. The tram runs every few minutes all day.
  • 3
Walking from GalataportGalata Tower: 15–20 min uphill walk. Spice Bazaar (Eminönü): 20–25 min walk along the waterfront. Grand Bazaar: 35–45 min on foot — far better to take the tram 6 stops to Beyazıt.
  • 4
Taxi / rideshareBiTaksi (local app) or Uber work well and show fixed prices upfront. Galataport to Sultanahmet runs about 150–250 TL depending on traffic. Taxis are metered — always confirm the meter is running. Traffic can be heavy; tram is faster for Old City.

💡 Pro move: The T1 tram is your single most useful tool — it connects Karaköy, Eminönü, Sultanahmet, and the Grand Bazaar in one direct line. Keep your Istanbulkart or contactless payment ready; inspectors check.

Top Excursions

Istanbul's top sights cluster tightly in Sultanahmet — Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, and the Basilica Cistern are all within a 15-minute walk of each other, making independent exploration very rewarding.

Iconic

Hagia Sophia & Blue Mosque

The two defining monuments of Istanbul face each other across Sultanahmet Square. Hagia Sophia (a working mosque since 2020) charges tourists €25 to access the upper gallery, where you get breathtaking views of the nave and Byzantine mosaics; women must cover their hair. The Blue Mosque remains free — it closes ~90 min per prayer time, and Fridays 12:30–2:30 PM. Arrive at Hagia Sophia by 9 AM to beat the afternoon crowds.

Topkapi Palace

The Ottoman sultans' imperial palace overlooks the Bosphorus at the tip of the Old City. The Harem section is a separate ticket and worth it — gilded rooms, tiled corridors, and courtyard gardens. A combined Palace + Harem ticket runs about 2,000 TL (~$55). Closed Tuesdays. The palace is within easy walking distance of Hagia Sophia.

Grand Bazaar & Spice Market

The Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı) is one of the world's oldest covered markets — 60 streets, 4,000+ shops. Entry is free; bargaining is expected (start at 50% of asking price). The Egyptian Spice Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı) near Eminönü is smaller, more atmospheric, and ideal for Turkish tea, lokum, and spices. Both close Sundays — plan accordingly.

Bosphorus Cruise

A 90-minute public ferry from Eminönü runs up the Bosphorus past Ottoman yalı mansions, Rumeli Fortress, and the two suspension bridges — remarkable value at just an Istanbulkart swipe. Private boat tours depart from Karaköy, right outside Galataport, and offer more flexibility. Don't miss the ferry from Karaköy to Kadıköy on the Asian side — a quick 20-minute crossing to a completely different city vibe.

Insider Tips

  • 🕌
Hagia Sophia — plan around prayer times: The tourist upper gallery closes on Fridays 12:30–2:30 PM for congregational prayers and briefly around other daily prayer times. Arrive by 9 AM for shortest queues; buy tickets at the dedicated booth outside. Women must cover hair — bring your own scarf.
  • 💰
Use Turkish Lira when you can — merchants accepting euros or USD apply poor exchange rates. ATMs at Galataport dispense lira; avoid currency exchange booths on the pier. Museum entry fees are priced in TL for foreigners (except Hagia Sophia's €25).
  • 🚃
T1 tram = your best transport: Karaköy stop is 2 minutes from the terminal exit. 4 stops to Sultanahmet (~10 min), 6 stops to Grand Bazaar (Beyazıt). Load an Istanbulkart at the Biletmatik machine or tap contactless. Taxis are fine but traffic can be brutal.
  • 🛍
Grand Bazaar closes Sundays and on public holidays — check your call date. The Spice Bazaar also closes Sundays. If your ship calls on a Sunday, the waterfront Galataport shops, Istanbul Modern, and Bosphorus ferries are still open.
  • 🐟
Eat a fish sandwich: The balık ekmek (grilled mackerel in bread) boats at Eminönü — 1 tram stop from Galataport — are an unmissable Istanbul institution. Under $3, freshly grilled, eaten standing on the waterfront. Also try a simit (sesame bread ring) from any street cart.
