Getting Ashore

Ships dock directly at Hurghada Port, a secured commercial zone in the central Sekala (Sakkala) district, beside the Marina.

Getting Off the Ship

  • 1
Walk to the port gateIt's roughly 800 m–1 km from gangway to the main security gate — unshaded and hot. Allow 10–15 minutes.
  • 2
Clear securityYou'll pass a military/police checkpoint. Bring your cruise card and a passport photocopy; check your ship's newsletter for current requirements.
  • 3
Use Uber or the ship shuttleUber (and Careem) work in Hurghada and are far less stressful than negotiating with port-gate taxis. Uber pick-up is just outside the port gate on the main road. Many ships also run a paid shuttle to the Marina or Sheraton Road.

💡 Pro move: If taking a local taxi, agree on the fare (and currency) in writing before you get in — orange-and-blue taxis do not use meters for tourists.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Hurghada Port is a direct-docking facility upgraded under a 2024 AD Ports Group concession; tendering is not used.

Insider Tips

  • 🚖
Use Uber, not port-gate taxis. Careem/Uber costs a fraction of what taxi drivers charge tourists at the port gate, and prices are agreed upfront in the app.
  • 🏺
Luxor is a long day. The round-trip drive is 7–8 hrs alone — only attempt it if your ship is in port 12+ hours, and only on a ship-sponsored excursion so the vessel waits if you're delayed.
  • 🧴
Pack strong sunscreen. Hurghada averages 350 sunny days a year and almost no humidity. The Red Sea reflects UV intensely — reef-safe SPF 50 is the right choice.
  • 💧
Bottled water only. Don't drink tap water or use it to brush teeth. Sealed bottled water is cheap and everywhere.
  • 👗
Dress modestly off the beach. Swimwear is fine on private beaches and tour boats; cover shoulders and knees when walking through El Dahar or the city streets.

Getting Around

Transport options from the pier — taxis, shuttles, transit passes, and whether ride-share apps work here.

🚗 Ride-share: ✅ Uber, Careem, inDriveUber and Careem operate in Hurghada with reasonable coverage near the port and city center. inDrive also operates and lets you propose your own fare. App-based rides offer transparent pricing and avoid haggling.🚍 Hop-on hop-off: ❌ No HOHO bus

🚕 Taxi

100–250 EGP (~$3–8)

Taxis are plentiful at the port but meters are rarely used for tourists. Agree on the fare before you get in and pay in Egyptian Pounds for the best rate.

📱 Uber / Careem / inDrive

100–170 EGP (~$3–6)

Ride-hailing apps work well in central Hurghada and offer fixed, transparent fares with no haggling. Book from the port exit where cars can pick up.

🚐 Private Transfer

€13–25

Pre-booked private transfers offer air-conditioned vehicles with meet-and-greet service. Good value for groups heading directly to the marina, bazaars, or resorts.

🚌 Guided City Tour

€5–25 per person

Organized half-day tours cover the Hurghada Marina, Fish Market, Grand Mosque, and bazaars with an English-speaking guide. The most practical way to see the city given no HOHO option.

🏨 Cruise Shore Excursion

Varies

Ship-organized excursions handle all logistics and guarantee return to the ship before departure. Popular options include Red Sea snorkeling, quad biking, and camel rides in the desert.
