History

Mystras Byzantine Ghost City

A UNESCO World Heritage hilltop city that was once the second capital of the late Byzantine Empire. Ruined palaces, frescoed churches, and a still-inhabited convent cling to the slopes of Mount Taygetos. Wear sturdy shoes — the cobblestones are steep and slippery.

Insider Tips

  • Tender timing: Pick up tender tickets early on board — call-day crowds can mean 30-min waits for the boat back. Aim to be back at the tender dock 90 min before all-aboard.
  • 🚕
Taxis fill up fast: The taxi stand is steps from the tender pier. Agree on a round-trip price before you go — for Mystras or Diros, expect €60–90 for the car (not per person). Book private tours in advance on busy call days.
  • 🚗
Car rental books out: Local agencies (e.g., near the harbor) have small fleets. Reserve weeks ahead if you want to self-drive to the Mani or Diros Caves.
  • 🐙
Eat on the water: Any taverna with octopus drying outside is a good sign. Try grilled octopus, sygklino (smoked Mani pork), and local Laconian olive oil — this region grows some of Greece's best.
  • ☀️
Pack for heat and hills: Summer days can top 35 °C. Bring water, sunscreen, and sturdy shoes if you plan Mystras — its cobblestones are steep and can be slick.

Getting Around

Transport options from the pier — taxis, shuttles, transit passes, and whether ride-share apps work here.

🚍 Hop-on hop-off: ❌ No HOHO bus

🚶 Walk

Free

The cruise pier is steps from the town waterfront. The entire historic center, waterfront tavernas, and main sights are within a 5–10 minute walk.

🚕 Taxi

€5–€15

Taxis wait near the port and are available for short trips or longer excursions. Fares are metered in town; agree on a price before longer trips to Sparta or Mystras.

🚌 KTEL Bus

€4–€8

Regional KTEL buses connect Gythion to Sparta and other Peloponnese towns. The bus station is a short walk from the waterfront; check schedules as service is limited.

🚗 Rental Car

€40–€80/day

Local car rental agencies operate in Gythion town. A rental gives the most flexibility for visiting Mystras, Diros Caves, and the Mani peninsula on your own schedule.

🧭 Shore Excursion

€48–€150+

Guided tours from the port cover Sparta, Mystras, and the Diros Caves. Semi-private tours to Mystras run around €150/person; a 3-hour city archaeology tour starts around €48.
