Getting Ashore

Gothenburg is always a pier call — no tendering — but where you dock determines how you get into the city.

Getting Into the City

  • 1
Amerikaterminalen (Stigbergskajen, Berth 36)The historic inner-city terminal at Stigbergstorget (Masthugget), with Majorna just a few hundred metres west. Ships up to 220 m LOA dock here, a short walk from Haga, Linné, and Järntorget. The adjacent Stigbergstorget tram stop is 5 minutes away; trams 3, 9, and 11 reach the city center in about 10 minutes.
  • 2
Arendal Terminal (Berth 751/752)About 12 km west of downtown, handling mega-ships up to 320 m. Cruise lines run shuttle buses to Gustaf Adolfs Torg or the Opera House. Buses are paid separately if walking to public transit — the cruise shuttle is easier.
  • 3
Skandia & Älvsborg HarboursOuter industrial quays ~9 km from center. Shuttle buses bring you to the port gate; ISPS rules mean you cannot wander independently inside the port. All four terminals are pier calls — no tenders.
  • 4
Public transit in the cityBuy single tickets or a day pass on the Västtrafik To Go app, or simply tap your contactless credit card on the tram reader. Trams criss-cross the entire city.

💡 Pro move: The tram network is excellent — a day transit pass covers trams, buses, and even ferries to the Southern Archipelago islands.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Gothenburg has four dedicated cruise berths; your ship's size and schedule determine which one you use.

Large ships (≤320 m)Arendal Terminal, 12 km west — shuttle to city📍Docked

Insider Tips

  • 💳
Go cashless — no SEK needed. Sweden is one of the world's most cashless countries. Every tram, market stall, café, and museum accepts contactless cards and Apple/Google Pay. Foreign-transaction-free cards work perfectly.
  • 🚋
Tram tap-on is the easiest transit. Tap your contactless card directly on the tram reader (one tap per person). Or use the Västtrafik To Go app for a day pass. Do not buy paper tickets on board.
  • 🌧️
Pack a windbreaker always. West coast Gothenburg weather is famous for changing quickly. Even on sunny forecasts, a light rain layer is smart — you'll thank yourself if a squall rolls in.
  • 🍤
Try a räkmacka for lunch. The Swedish cold-water shrimp sandwich (open-faced rye, shrimp, egg, dill, mayo) is cheap, delicious, and deeply local. Get one at Saluhallen or any dockside lunch spot.
  • 🏝️
Archipelago takes time. The island ferry trip to Vrångö or Brännö is about 45–60 min each way. Only attempt it if your ship departs at 6 PM or later — and confirm departure time before you board the ferry.

Getting Around

Transport options from the pier — taxis, shuttles, transit passes, and whether ride-share apps work here.

🚗 Ride-share: ✅ Uber, BoltBoth Uber and Bolt operate in Gothenburg. Lyft is not available in Sweden.

🚍 Stromma / City Sightseeing

Hop-on hop-off boat (Paddan) and bus tours available. Combined bus+boat ticket ~SEK 499.

Book tickets →

🚕 Taxi

SEK 100–450 (~$9–43 USD)

Fare varies greatly by terminal. America/Frihamnen terminals (1–2.5 km) run SEK 100–170; Arendal Terminal (12–13 km) runs SEK 350–450. Agree on a fixed price before departing.

📱 Rideshare (Uber / Bolt)

Similar to taxi

Both Uber and Bolt are active in Gothenburg. Upfront pricing via app. Good option from all terminals.

🚌 Cruise Line Shuttle

Varies (sometimes free)

Many cruise lines offer shuttle buses from farther terminals (Arendal, Skandia, Älvsborg) to central Gothenburg near the Opera House. Check with your ship.

🚋 Public Tram / Bus (Västtrafik)

SEK 37 (~$3.50 USD) per ride

Gothenburg has an excellent tram network. A single Zone A ticket covers the city. Best from terminals close to the center; not practical from Arendal without a shuttle first.
