Getting Ashore

Genoa's Stazione Marittima cruise terminal is walkable to almost everything worth seeing.

Getting Ashore in Genoa

  • 1
Disembark at Stazione MarittimaThe cruise terminal sits right on the Porto Antico waterfront. Walk out and you're already in the thick of it — the Aquarium is 300 m away, the historic caruggi lanes a 5-minute walk inland.
  • 2
On foot is bestThe UNESCO old town is compact and largely pedestrian. Wear comfortable shoes — the lanes are cobbled and can be steep.
  • 3
Taxis & local transitTaxis queue at the terminal exit. City buses cover the wider city, and the Ascensore Castelletto (a public lift) runs from Piazza del Portello up to the hilltop Castelletto viewpoint.
  • 4
Ship's shuttlesMost lines do not run a shuttle — the central location makes it unnecessary. Confirm with your ship before relying on one.

💡 Pro move: Genoa is a homeport for many Mediterranean itineraries, so the terminal can be busy on turnaround days. Allow extra time if departing from here.

Insider Tips

  • 🎟️
Book the Aquarium online. Queues at the Acquario di Genova can be long on busy ship days — pre-book tickets to walk straight in.
  • 🍃
Eat pesto where it's made. Trofie al pesto is the local staple. Small trattorias in the caruggi serve it fresh and cheap — skip the tourist restaurants facing the port.
  • 👟
Cobblestones everywhere. The historic lanes are uneven and can be steep. Comfortable walking shoes are essential — ditch the sandals.
  • 🚆
Cinque Terre is doable but tight. Only attempt it if your ship is in port for at least 10 hours — the train ride is 90+ min each way. Missing the ship is not worth it.
  • 💶
Cash handy in the caruggi. Most small food stalls and bakeries in the medieval lanes are cash-only. ATMs are common around Piazza de Ferrari.

Getting Around

Transport options from the pier — taxis, shuttles, transit passes, and whether ride-share apps work here.

🚗 Ride-share: ❌ Not available — use taxisUber ride-hailing is not available in Genoa; only Uber Rent (car rental) operates. Bolt launched in Milan in 2026 but has not confirmed Genoa. Traditional taxis are the app-bookable option via SIXT or local taxi apps.

🚍 City Sightseeing Genoa

Combo tickets available with Aquarium or Lighthouse entry. Online booking saves 10–15%.

The Stazione Marittima cruise terminal is right at the edge of the historic center. Many attractions — Piazza De Ferrari, the caruggi (old lanes), Porto Antico — are walkable within 10–20 minutes.

🚕 Taxi

€10–€18

Official white taxis are metered and abundant at the terminal. The ride to the city center takes roughly 7–8 minutes. Fixed-rate private transfers start around €50 for up to 5 passengers.

🚇 Public Transit (AMT)

€1.60 / ride

Genoa's AMT network includes buses and a single metro line. Tickets (€1.60 for 90 min) are sold at tobacconists and ticket machines. Useful for reaching neighborhoods outside the historic core.

Pre-booked private transfers (via Knopka, Welcome Pickups, etc.) offer door-to-door service with fixed pricing — ideal for groups or if heading directly to a day-trip destination like Cinque Terre.
