Insider Tips

  • 💶
Bring cash. The riverside wine booth and many traditional Gutsschänken (winery taverns) accept only cash or German EC cards, not international credit cards.
  • 🌹
Best in June–July. Rose season peaks in June; the annual Rose Days (Rosentage) festival takes place then. Over 10,000 rose bushes bloom throughout town.
  • 🏪
Sunday closures. Shops in the Altstadt close on Sundays under German trading laws. Restaurants, wine booths, and the castle gardens remain open.
  • 🚕
Kloster Eberbach by taxi. Book a return pickup with your driver when you arrive — taxis are scarce at the abbey itself. Allow at least 2 hrs at the monastery.
  • 🍷
Sip Sekt at the source. Eltville is the historical home of German sparkling wine — try a glass of traditionally made Sekt rather than still wine for something uniquely local.
