Getting Ashore

Most cruise ships dock at Cádiz; El Puerto de Santa María is a 30-minute catamaran ride across the Bay of Cádiz — easy, scenic, and very cheap.

Getting to El Puerto from Cádiz

  • 1
Walk to the ferry terminalFrom the Cádiz cruise pier (Alfonso XIII), it's a 3-minute walk to the Terminal Marítima de Cádiz on the harbour front.
  • 2
Take the Bay of Cádiz catamaranBuy tickets at the terminal kiosk — around €5 each way. Crossings run roughly every 1–1.5 hours; the ride takes ~30 minutes across open bay.
  • 3
Arrive at El Puerto's river terminalThe catamaran docks on the Guadalete River right in the heart of town. The Castillo de San Marcos is a 5-minute walk; Bodegas Osborne 12 minutes.
  • 4
Return: allow a bufferStrong levante winds occasionally suspend the catamaran service. If that happens, a replacement bus runs to Cádiz — but it takes longer. Leave 90 minutes before 'all aboard' to be safe.

💡 Pro move: Trains also run from Cádiz Station (15-min walk from cruise pier) to El Puerto in ~25 min on the C1 Cercanías line — a good backup if the ferry is cancelled.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Cruise ships almost always berth at Cádiz; a handful of small expedition vessels may use El Puerto's commercial quay on the Guadalete River.

History

Castillo de San Marcos & Columbus Connection

A 13th-century castle built over a 10th-century Moorish mosque — you can still see the mihrab prayer niche inside. Christopher Columbus lodged here under the patronage of the Duke of Medinaceli while planning his first westward voyage to the Indies; the Duke later helped him present the project to the Catholic Monarchs. Tours often end with a sherry tasting.

Insider Tips

  • Ferry first: Check catamaran schedules at the Cádiz pier kiosk as soon as you disembark your ship — frequencies change seasonally and sell out in peak summer.
  • 💨
Wind warning: The Bay of Cádiz gets strong levante winds. If the catamaran is suspended, a replacement bus runs but takes longer — always leave 90 min before ship departure.
  • 🕑
Siesta is real here: Shops, churches, and smaller attractions close 2–5 PM. Time your bodega tour or long seafood lunch for this window — locals do, and you'll blend right in.
  • 🍷
Book Osborne online: English-language tours at Bodegas Osborne fill up, especially on ship days. Reserve a slot at osborne.es before you sail.
  • 💶
Cash is handy: Romerijo and some smaller tapas bars are cash-preferred. There are ATMs near Plaza de España. The whole day — ferry, castle, lunch, sherry tasting — can be done for under €50.
