Easter Island (Hanga Roa), Chile

One of the most remote inhabited islands on Earth — a wind-swept triangle of volcanic craters, ceremonial platforms, and nearly a thousand brooding moai staring out from the Pacific. Your shore day here is genuinely unlike anywhere else.

Getting Ashore

Easter Island is a tender-only port with no cruise pier — ships anchor off Hanga Roa and ferry passengers ashore in small boats to the Caleta Hanga Roa fishing harbor.

Tender to Hanga Roa

  • 1
Tender to Caleta Hanga RoaShips anchor in the open roadstead off Hanga Roa. The ship operates its own tender boats to the small fishing harbor (Caleta Hanga Roa). Collect a tender ticket early — queues build mid-morning. The ride takes about 10–15 minutes.
  • 2
Swell can cancel the callEaster Island is notorious for Pacific swell. If conditions are too rough, the captain may declare tenders unsafe and the call is skipped entirely — this is not rare. Have a backup plan emotionally, and prioritize your most important sites first thing ashore.
  • 3
Getting around the islandThe island is 25 km long — too large to explore on foot. Hire a taxi, rent a car or scooter in town, or book a ship tour. Guided tours cover the main sites efficiently and are worth the cost for first-timers. Shared taxis and local guides congregate at the harbor.

💡 Pro move: Book shore excursions in advance — independent guides and rental cars sell out on busy ship days. The island has limited infrastructure; ATMs exist but can run out of cash. Bring Chilean pesos or USD as backup.

Iconic

Rano Raraku & Ahu Tongariki

The volcanic quarry where nearly all 900+ moai were carved, with dozens still half-finished in the hillside — hauntingly surreal. A short drive brings you to Ahu Tongariki, the island's most dramatic platform: 15 restored moai in a row facing inland against the Pacific sky.

Anakena Beach

The island's only white-sand beach on the north coast, framed by palm trees and two ahu (platforms) — including a platform with seven moai, some still bearing their red topknots. A beautiful spot to swim and picnic after the archaeology circuit.

Ahu Akivi — Inland-Facing Moai

The only ahu whose seven moai face the ocean rather than land — astronomically aligned to the setting sun at equinox. A quieter, less-visited site that rewards those interested in Rapa Nui cosmology.

Insider Tips

  • Swells cancel calls. Easter Island is one of the most swell-affected tender ports in the world. If seas are running, the captain may abort the call entirely. Don't plan your trip around a single Easter Island call — treat it as a bonus.
  • 🎟️
Buy your national park entry before you sail. Rapa Nui National Park (UNESCO) charges a $100 USD entry fee per person, collected at the airport — ships usually handle this via excursion packages. Confirm with your cruise line whether park fees are included.
  • 🚗
Rent a car or hire a guide. The main sites are 15–25 km from Hanga Roa. Taxis and rental cars (car, scooter, ATV) are available near the harbor — book ahead on busy ship days. A half-day guide adds real context to the moai.
  • 💧
Bring water and sunscreen. The island has almost no shade at the ahu sites, and the equatorial sun is fierce. Carry at least 1.5L of water per person and reef-safe sunscreen.
  • 💵
Cash and cards. Chilean pesos are preferred; USD is accepted at many shops. There are a couple of ATMs in Hanga Roa but they run out on ship days — bring some cash from the ship or withdraw early.
