The Pearl of the Adriatic: a UNESCO-listed medieval walled city rising straight from the sea, famous for its 2 km circuit of stone walls, Game of Thrones filming locations, and that impossible-blue Adriatic light.
All large cruise ships dock at Port Gruž (Luka Gruž), a modern commercial port 3 km northwest of the walled Old City — no tendering required, but a short transfer is necessary.
💡 Pro move: Walking from Port Gruž to the Old City (40–50 min, partly uphill on busy roads) is not recommended in summer heat. The Old City itself is fully pedestrianized — once through Pile Gate the Stradun (main promenade) runs straight across. Wear flat, grip-soled shoes: the polished limestone is beautiful but slippery when wet.
All large cruise ships berth at Port Gruž; no tendering is required. Up to five ships can dock simultaneously at the extended modern quay, which can handle Oasis-class vessels.
| Cruise Line | Typical Berth / Arrival | Dock or Tender |
|---|---|---|
| Most major cruise lines | Port Gruž (Luka Gruž) — Berths 1–5📍 | Docked |
| Small luxury & expedition ships | Port Gruž inner quay / Old City Harbour (occasional)📍 | Docked |
Dubrovnik punches above its size — the Old City alone fills a day, but the cable car, islands, and cross-border runs to Montenegro or Bosnia add real depth.
The 2 km circuit of Dubrovnik's medieval walls is one of the great urban walks in Europe. Panoramic views over terracotta rooftops, the Adriatic, and the islands — plus towers, ramparts, and a surprising number of cafés built into the walls. Buy tickets at the gate or online (€40 adults, includes Fort Lovrijenac). Go at opening (8 AM) or after 4 PM to beat the worst crowds and midday heat.
Find city walls tours →A 4-minute ride up Mount Srđ (412 m) delivers the most dramatic panorama in Dalmatia — the Old City laid out like a model, Lokrum Island below, and on clear days the coast all the way to Montenegro. The summit also holds the Homeland War Museum and a restaurant. Lower station is a 10-minute walk from Ploče Gate.
Find cable car tickets →A 15-minute ferry from the Old City harbour drops you on a forested nature reserve with botanical gardens, roaming peacocks, a ruined Benedictine monastery, the briny 'Dead Sea' lake for swimming, and a Game of Thrones visitor centre with the replica Iron Throne. A genuine escape from Old City crowds.
Find Lokrum ferry tickets →A half or full-day cruise visits three tranquil islands northwest of Dubrovnik — Koločep, Lopud, and Šipan. Crystal-clear swimming stops, charming car-free villages, fresh-caught seafood lunch, and far fewer crowds than the Old City. One of the best ways to spend time if your ship calls for 10+ hours.
Find Elafiti Islands tours →A full-day cross-border excursion to the iconic city of Mostar, famous for the 16th-century Stari Most (Old Bridge) arching over the Neretva River and its Ottoman-era bazaar. Bring your passport — you'll cross an international border. About 2.5–3 hours each way; better as a ship-excursion than DIY to manage timing.
Find Mostar day trips →A lovely alternative to the hectic Old City, Cavtat is a relaxed harbor town 30 minutes south of Dubrovnik by local bus or water taxi. Venetian-era architecture, a cypress-lined waterfront promenade, the Racić Mausoleum (Ivan Meštrović), and seafood restaurants with half the price and a tenth of the crowds.
Find Cavtat tours →The Old City is compact and entirely car-free — you can cross it end-to-end in 15 minutes, but the alleys, stairways, and sea-wall viewpoints reward hours of wandering.
The classic introduction: enter at Pile Gate, stroll the entire Stradun (Placa) limestone promenade to Ploče Gate passing Onofrio's Large Fountain, the Franciscan Monastery, Sponza Palace, and Orlando's Column. Loop back through the quieter parallel streets (Prijeko, Od Pustijerne) to discover neighbourhood life away from the main drag.
From Stradun, climb any staircase heading south toward the city walls and follow signage for 'Buža Bar' — a famous cliff-side bar with seats literally above the Adriatic, accessed through a hole in the city wall. Order a drink and stay for the views. This side of the Old City is far quieter than the Stradun side.
