Rome's cruise gateway puts you 80 km from the Colosseum — a regional train from the port has you inside the Forum in under 90 minutes. Stay local and Civitavecchia rewards too: a Bramante-designed fortress, Etruscan ruins, and the best seafood lunches you'll find at a cruise port.
Ships dock at the Stazione Marittima; a mandatory free port shuttle takes you to Largo della Pace, the transport hub 5–10 minutes from the city center and train station.
💡 Pro move: Allow at least 2 hours to return from central Rome to the ship. Train + port shuttle adds up fast. If your ship is in port until 19:00, aim to leave Rome by 17:00.
All cruise ships dock at the Stazione Marittima; berth assignment is confirmed by the Port Authority on the morning of arrival.

From world-capital blockbusters to empty Etruscan tombs and beach days, Civitavecchia's excursion range is the widest of any Mediterranean port.
The non-negotiable headline. Built in 80 AD for 50,000 spectators, the Colosseum and the adjacent Roman Forum are a Metro or taxi ride from Roma Termini. Allow 3–4 hours and book timed-entry tickets online before you sail — sold-out days are routine in summer.
Find Colosseum tours →The world's largest art museum ends at Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling and deposits you in St. Peter's Square. The dome climb (551 steps, or shorter by lift) gives Rome's best panorama. Timed entry is mandatory and must be reserved in advance; lines without a ticket are hours long.
Find Vatican tours →Far less crowded than Pompeii and arguably better preserved, Ostia Antica is Rome's ancient harbour town: intact apartment blocks, a 4,000-seat theatre, marble mosaics, and a fast-food thermopolium. From Civitavecchia take a train to Roma Ostiense, then the Roma-Lido commuter line to Ostia Antica station (covered on the BIRG ticket). Allow 3–4 hours on site.
Find Ostia Antica tours →One train stop south of Civitavecchia (5–10 min, ~€2), Santa Marinella is a proper Italian beach resort. Sandy lidos, Castello Odescalchi rising from the headland, and waterfront seafood restaurants make this the best easy-beach day from any Mediterranean cruise port. Arrive by 10 AM for a sun lounger.
Find Santa Marinella beach days →Within 15 km of the port lie two underrated gems: the Terme Taurine Roman bath ruins (~5 km; taxi), and Tarquinia's painted Etruscan tombs — a UNESCO World Heritage site 15 minutes north by train. Tarquinia's necropolis has vivid 2,500-year-old frescoes in dozens of intact burial chambers. Far fewer tourists than anything in Rome.
Find Tarquinia excursions →Trastevere is Rome's most liveable neighbourhood — cobbled lanes, ivy-draped buildings, and trattorias serving cacio e pepe, coda alla vaccinara (oxtail stew), and fried artichokes. From Roma Termini take tram 8 via Largo di Torre Argentina. Best in late morning before tour groups arrive.
Find Trastevere food tours →Civitavecchia is flat and walkable from Largo della Pace; Rome's own walking circuits take over once you step off the train.
From Largo della Pace, walk north past the harbour wall to Forte Michelangelo — the 16th-century fortress designed by Bramante and later modified by Michelangelo himself. Continue to Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II and the Museo Nazionale Archeologico for Etruscan finds before looping back along the lungomare.
Exit Colosseo Metro, walk to the Colosseum, then follow Via Sacra through the Roman Forum, up to Palatine Hill for sweeping views over the Circus Maximus, and back down. The best concentrated ancient history walk in the world.
