Getting Ashore

Almost all cruise ships anchor in Alghero Bay and tender passengers directly to the old harbour, steps from the historic centre.

Getting Ashore in Alghero

  • 1
Tender to the old harbourShip tenders drop at the Molo Dogana landing stage at the base of the old town walls — a 10–15 min ride from anchorage depending on sea conditions.
  • 2
Check tender schedule earlyLast tender back is typically 30 min before all-aboard. Confirm times on the gangway notice board; afternoon swells occasionally cause delays.
  • 3
Small ships may dockVessels under ~50 m can berth at Banchina Dogana or Banchina Sanità quays — a short walk into town; check your ship's daily programme.

💡 Pro move: Neptune's Grotto boat trips depart from the main harbour — you can book dock-side on arrival, but book early as capacity is limited on busy days.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Insider Tips

  • Tender early or late. Mid-morning tenders from a full ship can queue 20–30 min; head ashore at opening or after the rush, and return at least 1 hr before all-aboard.
  • 🚤
Book Neptune's Grotto first. Boat trips sell out quickly on busy ship days — buy a ticket at the harbour kiosk as soon as you step ashore. Skip it if weather is rough; the cave is closed in strong swells.
  • 🦞
Lunch budget tip. Aragosta alla Catalana is pricey (€30–50 per portion) but worth it once. Set-menu lunches (€15–20) in the old town are an excellent alternative.
  • 🔴
Red coral is the souvenir. Alghero is Italy's red-coral capital. Buy from reputable old-town jewellers — avoid cheap street stalls which often sell dyed fakes.
  • 🌡️
Summer heat. July–August calls can top 35 °C. The old-town lanes are shaded but beaches are exposed — bring water and sunscreen.
