Insider Tips

  • 💶
Carry cash. Northern Germany still runs on Euros in pocket — fish buns at the harbor, public toilets, and small cafes often don't take cards. ATMs are available near the Marktplatz.
  • 👟
Wear real walking shoes. The entire Old Town is heavily cobbled. Flip-flops and heels will make you miserable within minutes.
  • 🏰
Schwerin is worth the train ride. If your ship stays 7+ hours, the 30-minute train to Schwerin and back fits easily. Buy tickets at the station — it's a 10-min walk from the pier.
  • 🛍️
Sunday closures. German blue laws close most retail shops on Sundays. Tourist cafes, restaurants, and souvenir shops in the Old Town stay open, but plan accordingly.
  • 📸
Best photo spots: the Alter Schwede's stepped gable from the Marktplatz, the St. Marien tower ruins at dusk, and the Swedish Heads along the harbor walk.
