Getting Ashore

Most ships berth at CentrePort's Aotea Quay, a working port about 1.5 km north of the city centre. A free or low-cost shuttle bus runs to Lambton Quay downtown.

Getting into Wellington

  • 1
Shuttle to Lambton QuayCruise lines typically run complimentary shuttle buses from Aotea Quay to the city centre (Lambton Quay / Historic Government Buildings). Walking through the active port area is not permitted.
  • 2
Smaller ships at Queens WharfIf your vessel uses Queens Wharf, the city centre is an easy 5-10 minute walk along the waterfront.
  • 3
Taxis & RideshareUber operates in Wellington. Taxis cannot enter the wharf directly — arrange pickup at the shuttle drop point on Lambton Quay or call ahead.

💡 Pro move: The cruise season runs October–April. Wellington is famous for wind — bring a layer.

Insider Tips

  • 🌬️
Pack a windproof layer. Wellington earns its 'Windy Wellington' nickname — the harbour gap funnels strong southerlies year-round. Even on sunny days a jacket is essential.
  • 🚌
Don't miss the shuttle back. The last shuttle from Lambton Quay to Aotea Quay runs before all-aboard — confirm the schedule with your ship. Walking back through the working port is not allowed.
  • 💳
Card is king. New Zealand is largely cashless — most cafés, shops, and attractions accept Visa/Mastercard contactless. A little NZD cash is handy for small markets.
  • 🎟️
Te Papa is free. New Zealand's national museum on the waterfront charges no admission — an outstanding way to spend two or three hours without spending a cent.
  • Wellington coffee is world-class. The city has a fiercely proud café culture. Skip the chain coffee and ask a local for their favourite flat white — you won't be disappointed.
