A French overseas territory of three traditional kingdoms, Wallis and Futuna is one of the rarest cruise stops in the South Pacific — unspoiled, unhurried, and deeply authentic. Expect cathedral singing, volcanic crater lakes, and tapa cloth, not tourist kiosks.
All cruise ships anchor offshore and tender passengers ashore — no cruise pier exists on either island.
💡 Pro move: Bring CFP Francs from home. ATMs in Mata-Utu exist but may reject foreign cards or run dry. US dollars and Euros are rarely accepted by locals.
Both Wallis and Futuna are tender-only ports with small local wharves rather than cruise terminals.
| Cruise Line | Typical Berth / Arrival | Dock or Tender |
|---|---|---|
| Most cruise lines (Wallis call) | Mata-Utu Wharf, Wallis Island📍 | Tendered |
| Expedition ships (Futuna call) | Leava Wharf, Sigave Bay, Futuna📍 | Tendered |
With almost no independent tourism infrastructure, ship-organized excursions are the most reliable way to reach the island's standout sights.
Wallis's crown jewel — a near-perfect circular volcanic crater lake ringed by sheer 30-metre red cliffs. Tropical seabirds nest in the walls and the water is rumoured to hold giant eels. Reached by taxi or ship excursion.
Find Wallis island tours →A restored 15th-century Tongan fortified settlement in southern Wallis, with basalt stone platforms, defensive walls, and a sacred marae. One of the finest pre-European sites in Polynesia.
Find Wallis history tours →On Futuna calls, cruise lines typically arrange a traditional kava ceremony and soke stick dance at a local fale (meeting house). These are energetic, authentic, and not commercially staged.
Find Futuna cultural experiences →If your call falls on a Sunday, attend mass at the imposing blue-volcanic-stone Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption. The congregation's multi-part harmonic singing is one of the Pacific's most memorable sounds. Free.
Plan your Wallis port day →The best beaches on Wallis are on uninhabited sandy islets (motus) inside the barrier reef — Luaniva and Fugalei have pristine white sand. Requires a boat, usually arranged through the ship.
Find Wallis lagoon excursions →The Basilica at Poi is a pilgrimage site for Catholics across Oceania, honouring the first Oceanian saint martyred on Futuna in 1841. His relics are displayed inside. Requires a taxi or tour along Futuna's coast road.
Find Futuna island tours →Walkable sights are concentrated in Mata-Utu; the rest of the islands require transport.
From the tender wharf, walk to the blue-stone Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption, then to the adjacent white-painted Palace of the King of Uvea (Palais Royal). The palace cannot be entered but the setting — cathedral, king's residence, and lagoon — is quietly remarkable. Continue a few minutes along the seafront for views back to your ship.
