Wallis and Futuna Islands, South Pacific, France

A French overseas territory of three traditional kingdoms, Wallis and Futuna is one of the rarest cruise stops in the South Pacific — unspoiled, unhurried, and deeply authentic. Expect cathedral singing, volcanic crater lakes, and tapa cloth, not tourist kiosks.

Getting Ashore

All cruise ships anchor offshore and tender passengers ashore — no cruise pier exists on either island.

Getting Ashore by Tender

  • 1
Tender from shipShips anchor in the lagoon off Mata-Utu (Wallis) or in Sigave Bay near Leava (Futuna). Ship's tenders run to the main wharf. Futuna's lack of a barrier reef can make tendering bouncy in swells.
  • 2
Arrive at Mata-Utu WharfThe Wallis tender dock places you steps from the cathedral and royal palace. Nearly everything walkable is within 5 minutes.
  • 3
Arrange transport for sights beyond townCrater lakes, archaeological sites, and motus (lagoon islets) all require a taxi, a cruise-organized shore excursion, or a local boat. Taxis are very limited — book via your ship.

💡 Pro move: Bring CFP Francs from home. ATMs in Mata-Utu exist but may reject foreign cards or run dry. US dollars and Euros are rarely accepted by locals.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Both Wallis and Futuna are tender-only ports with small local wharves rather than cruise terminals.

From the tender wharf, walk to the blue-stone Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption, then to the adjacent white-painted Palace of the King of Uvea (Palais Royal). Insider Tips

  • 💵
Bring CFP Francs (XPF) from your last major port — Noumea, Tahiti, or Fiji. ATMs exist in Mata-Utu but routinely reject foreign cards or run out of cash. USD and EUR are rarely accepted.
  • 🕊️
Sunday = everything closed. Wallis and Futuna are deeply Catholic. If your ship calls on Sunday, shops and restaurants will be shut. Attend mass at the cathedral instead — it's extraordinary.
  • 👗
Dress modestly in villages and churches — shoulders and knees covered for everyone. Swimwear is fine only on the lagoon islets.
  • 🦟
Bring DEET-level mosquito repellent. The islands are hot and humid year-round and dengue fever has been present. Also pack reef-safe sunscreen and a hat.
  • 📵
No public Wi-Fi; roaming is extremely expensive or non-existent. Use this port to fully disconnect. It's a feature, not a bug.
