One of the world's few open predator-free sanctuaries, Ulva Island dazzles with ancient podocarp forest and birds so fearless they'll hop onto your boots.
Getting to Ulva Island requires two steps: from ship to Stewart Island (Oban), then a separate short boat hop.
💡 Pro move: Biosecurity check mandatory before stepping ashore — clean boots, bags, and velcro for seeds and pests at the inspection station.
There is no pier on Ulva Island; all arrivals are by small boat, either expedition Zodiac or water taxi from Golden Bay Wharf on Stewart Island.

Almost everything on Ulva Island is walking and wildlife — a guided tour is the single best investment for spotting rare birds.
Expert local guides (Ulva's Guided Walks, Ruggedy Range) lead 2.5–3-hr walks, identifying bird calls, mimicking them to draw species close, and explaining the island's ecology. Far more birds seen than solo walking.

Find kayak tours →All tracks are well-formed gravel paths with gentle gradients — the whole network can be walked in about 3 hours.
From Post Office Bay wharf, follow the main track south through ancient podocarp forest past West End Beach junction to Boulder Beach on the southern coast. Return the same way or loop via Sydney Cove.
