Getting Ashore

Getting to Ulva Island requires two steps: from ship to Stewart Island (Oban), then a separate short boat hop.

Getting Ashore

  • 1
Expedition shipsSmall expedition vessels anchor in Paterson Inlet and Zodiac or tender passengers directly to Post Office Bay or Sydney Cove on Ulva Island. Follow crew briefings on biosecurity checks before landing.
  • 2
Larger cruise shipsShips anchor in Halfmoon Bay and tender to Oban (Halfmoon Bay wharf). From there it's a 15-min walk or 5-min taxi ride to Golden Bay Wharf, then a 7-min water taxi to Ulva Island's Post Office Bay.
  • 3
Book water taxi in advanceWater taxi capacity is limited. If your ship doesn't arrange it, book ahead with a local operator (e.g., Ulva Island Ferry). Allow plenty of time before the last tender back to ship.

💡 Pro move: Biosecurity check mandatory before stepping ashore — clean boots, bags, and velcro for seeds and pests at the inspection station.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Insider Tips

  • 🦟
Sandflies are fierce. Bring strong DEET or Picaridin repellent and wear long sleeves. The beaches are the worst spots.
  • 🌦
Layer up. At 47° South the weather can flip from sunny to rainy in minutes. Waterproof jacket is non-negotiable.
  • 🐭
Biosecurity is serious. Clean all footwear and check bags for seeds and rodents before landing. Failure to comply can mean a refusal of entry.
  • 🚤
Book your return water taxi. If not on a ship-organised excursion, pre-book a fixed return time — you do not want to miss the last tender.
  • 🍱
No food or drink sold on island. Bring sealed snacks and water. Open food is restricted; eat on the beach and carry all rubbish off.
