Getting Ashore

Ubatuba is a tender-only port — ships anchor in the bay and ferry passengers to shore by tender boat.

Getting Ashore

  • 1
Tender to Itaguá pier (most common)MSC and most lines drop passengers at Praia do Itaguá in the town center, a 7-minute tender ride. Restaurants, shops, Projeto Tamar, and the Aquarium are all within a 15-minute walk.
  • 2
Tender to Saco da Ribeira (some lines)Some ships use the marina at Saco da Ribeira, 15 km south of town. Nothing is walkable from here — take a taxi or Uber to reach the center and beaches.
  • 3
Taxis & UberBoth are available at both tender piers. Uber is cheaper but surge during cruise calls; negotiate taxi fares before boarding. Keep BRL cash handy.

💡 Pro move: Confirm your ship's tender drop-off point before departing — it changes the whole plan.

Insider Tips

  • 🦟
Pack bug repellent with DEET. Ubatuba is notorious for borrachudos — tiny blackflies whose bites itch for days. They're worst on wild beaches and near rivers. Standard sprays help; local Icaridin repellents work better. Buy at any pharmacy.
  • 🌧️
"Ubachuva" is real. Locals nickname the city after chuva (rain). The Atlantic Forest traps humidity and sudden downpours are common even on sunny mornings. Pack a compact rain jacket.
  • Know your tender pier before you disembark. Itaguá drop-off = walkable city; Saco da Ribeira = you need a taxi or you're stuck at the marina. Check your daily program the night before.
  • 💰
BRL cash is handy but not essential. Credit cards (Visa/Mastercard) are accepted widely, even by beach vendors with mobile readers. Withdraw reais from ATMs in town if you want flexibility at smaller kiosks.
  • 🍽️
Order azul marinho. Ubatuba's signature dish — fish stew slow-cooked with green bananas, which thicken the sauce to a blue-grey colour. It's delicious and unique to the Caiçara coast. Rua Guarani has several spots serving it.
