2
Taxi or shuttle to the centreA taxi to The Strand or the Breakwater Marina takes around 10 minutes. If your ship offers a shuttle, it typically drops at the city centre or ferry terminal. Confirm shuttle details on board.
3
Magnetic Island ferry from Breakwater TerminalSealink ferries depart from the Breakwater Marina terminal (near the city centre) to Magnetic Island roughly every hour. The crossing takes about 20 minutes. Buy tickets at the terminal — it's the single best day trip from Townsville.
4
Great Barrier Reef day tripsReef day trip operators depart from Townsville's Breakwater Marina. Pre-booking is essential — spaces fill quickly on cruise-call days.
💡 Pro move: The port is not walkable to the city, so budget for a taxi or use the ship's shuttle. Most of Townsville's highlights — The Strand, Reef HQ, Castle Hill — are easy once you're in the centre.
Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Townsville punches well above its size: a world-class reef, a relaxed island 20 minutes away, and one of Australia's best wildlife sanctuaries all within easy reach of the port.
Iconic
Magnetic Island Day Trip
Catch the Sealink ferry to Magnetic Island for koalas in the wild, the Forts Walk through WWII ruins with sweeping sea views, snorkelling at Alma Bay, and a lunch at Arcadia. One of the best island day trips in Australia.
Day-boat trips from Breakwater Marina reach the outer reef in under two hours — world-class coral, sea turtles, reef fish, and optional scuba. Pre-book; this is Townsville's premium experience.
A wildlife park about 17 km south of the city with crocodile shows, koala holds, wombats, cassowaries, and freshwater crocs in a natural bush setting. One of North Queensland's best wildlife encounters.
The world's largest living coral reef aquarium, right in the city centre, with a predator exhibit (sharks, rays) and the striking Museum of Underwater Art (MOUA) featuring Jason deCaires Taylor sculptures.
A distinctive pink granite monolith rising 286 m over the city — drive or walk a track to the summit for sweeping views of Townsville, Magnetic Island, and the Coral Sea. Short but rewarding.
Once in the city centre, The Strand waterfront is a lovely flat walk; Castle Hill rewards those who want a climb.

Insider Tips
⛴
Book Magnetic Island in advance. The Sealink ferry runs hourly and is easy to DIY, but reef and island tour boats fill fast on cruise-call days — book ahead or use a ship excursion.
🚕
The port is not walkable. Budget AUD $15–20 for a taxi to the city centre or ferry terminal, or check if your ship runs a paid shuttle. Uber also operates in Townsville.
☀️
Sun and heat are serious. Townsville is one of Australia's sunniest cities — SPF 50+, a hat, and water are essential, especially on Magnetic Island or a reef day.
🐊
Stinger season (Oct–May). Marine stingers (jellyfish) are present in tropical waters from October through May. Wear a stinger suit on reef trips and at beaches; The Strand rock pool is safe year-round.
💳
Cards are universal. Australia is near-cashless — cards and contactless payments work everywhere. A small amount of AUD cash is handy for market stalls or small operators.
🐨
Magnetic Island has wild koalas. The Forts Walk on Magnetic Island is one of the best places in Australia to spot koalas in the wild, not just in sanctuaries.
