History

Abbaye Saint-Philibert

One of the oldest and most complete Romanesque abbeys in France, built in the 10th–11th centuries from warm pink sandstone. The nave's massive drum pillars and unique transverse barrel vaults are unlike any Gothic cathedral. Don't skip the crypt or the remarkable 12th-century zodiac floor mosaics discovered in 2002.

Hôtel-Dieu & Musée Greuze

A beautifully preserved 17th-century hospital with curtained box beds and a stunning original apothecary — 300-year-old earthenware jars and copper pots still on the shelves. The adjoining Musée Greuze showcases works by Jean-Baptiste Greuze, the painter born here in 1725.

Insider Tips

  • 🕛
Lunch shutdown: Many shops and even some museums close from noon to 2 PM. Plan your abbey visit or sit-down lunch during this window, and save shopping for the morning or late afternoon.
  • 🛒
Saturday market: If your ship is in port on a Saturday morning, don't miss the market around the abbey — local cheeses, charcuterie, nougat, wine, and crafts from regional producers.
  • 🚲
Bikes are ideal here: The Voie Bleue path is flat and scenic. Check whether your cruise line provides bicycles (AmaWaterways and Avalon often do) or ask the tourist office for rental contacts.
  • 💶
Cash is useful: Cards are accepted at restaurants and museums, but small vendors, the market, and bakeries often prefer cash. An ATM is near the tourist office.
  • 🍷
Wine shopping: Tournus sits on the boundary of the Côte Chalonnaise and Mâconnais — look for Viré-Clessé or Mâcon-Villages Chardonnay to take home. Good value compared to Côte d'Or prices.
