Getting Ashore

Tórshavn is a pier port — ships berth directly at Skansabryggjan (closer) or the outer Molain quay. Both are flat, easy walks to the historic center.

Getting Ashore in Tórshavn

  • 1
From Skansabryggjan pierWalk 500 m (~5-10 min) along the flat harbor front to reach Tinganes and the Vágsbotnur waterfront. Skansin Fort is immediately adjacent to the berth.
  • 2
From Molain outer quayFollow the paved pedestrian path along the harbor for roughly 1.2 km (15-20 min flat walk) to reach the city center.
  • 3
Shuttles & busesSome cruise lines run a complimentary shuttle. The city's free red buses (Bussleiðin) also serve the harbor area — pick up a route map at the tourist kiosk near the pier.
  • 4
Data roaming warningThe Faroe Islands are NOT in the EU — standard EU roaming packages do not apply. Disable mobile data roaming or buy a local eSIM to avoid surprise charges.

💡 Pro move: A new passenger terminal was under construction as of 2025 (target completion mid-2026). Facilities and walking routes may have improved; check port notices on the day.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Tórshavn upgraded its harbor significantly in 2022 with four new cruise quays dredged to 15 m, accommodating even the largest ships pier-side.

Insider Tips

  • 🌦️
Dress for the "15-minute rule": Faroese weather can deliver rain, wind, fog, and sunshine within a single hour. Bring a windproof, waterproof layer no matter how sunny it looks when you step ashore.
  • 💳
Go cashless: The Faroe Islands are nearly 100% card-based. Visa and Mastercard are accepted everywhere, from taxis to coffee shops. DKK cash is accepted but rarely needed.
  • 📱
Turn off EU roaming: The Faroe Islands are not in the EU — your standard European data plan likely won't work here and roaming charges can be steep. Use pier Wi-Fi or a local eSIM (e.g. Airalo).
  • 🚌
Free city buses: Tórshavn's red Bussleiðin buses are completely free for all riders. Useful for reaching the National Museum (Tjóðsavnið) or the Nordic House without the walk.
  • 🏛️
Sunday closures: Most retail shops and supermarkets close on Sundays. Restaurants, cafes, and museums stay open, but it's quieter — great for wandering Tinganes without crowds.
