Oman's ancient maritime capital still builds wooden dhows by hand on its lagoon shore — and just down the coast, hundreds of green sea turtles haul themselves ashore each night at one of the world's great wildlife spectacles.
Sur is a tender port — ships anchor offshore and shuttle passengers to the Corniche quay near the lagoon.
💡 Pro move: On Fridays, forts close by 11 AM and the souq opens late (around 4 PM). Check your port day if Friday falls on your call.
Sur has no dedicated cruise terminal — all passenger ships tender to the town's lagoon waterfront.
| Cruise Line | Typical Berth / Arrival | Dock or Tender |
|---|---|---|
| Expedition & small ships (e.g. Explora Journeys) | Anchor offshore, tender to Al Khor/Corniche quay📍 | Tendered |
| All other cruise lines | Anchor offshore, tender to Al Khor/Corniche quay📍 | Tendered |
Sur punches above its weight as a port: the dhow yard is walkable, but two of Oman's top sights — Wadi Shab gorge and the Ras Al Jinz turtle reserve — are within an hour's drive.
Watch craftsmen build ocean-going wooden dhows entirely by hand without blueprints — a tradition stretching back a thousand years. The grounded museum ship Fatah Al Khair sits outside. Entry is around 1 OMR.
