  • 2
Cross via the reaction ferryThe historic Gierseilfähre (reaction ferry) operates right next to the berth. It uses river current alone — no engine — to reach the Pötzscha district and the train station on the left bank.

Insider Tips

  • 💶
Bring cash. Germany — especially small Saxon towns — is cash-heavy. Cards are often refused at the reaction ferry, the miniature park, trailside kiosks, and small cafes.
  • 🥾
Wear proper shoes. Cobblestones in town, steep sandstone trails to the Bastei — even a 'quick stroll' turns into uneven ground quickly.
  • 🌊
Ask about water levels before you hike far. Low Elbe summers can cause last-minute itinerary swaps to bus transfers. Confirm your departure time with the ship.
  • Ride the Gierseilfähre. The silent, current-powered reaction ferry is one of the few remaining in Europe. Costs a euro or two and is an experience in itself.
  • 🎂
Try Eierschecke at a riverside cafe — the regional three-layer Saxon cake (yeast base, quark, custard) you won't find outside Saxony.
