St. Lawrence Seaway, Ontario/Quebec, Canada/USA

One of the engineering marvels of the 20th century, the St. Lawrence Seaway lifts ocean-going ships through a staircase of locks across the Canada-U.S. border — a dramatic transit best watched from the bow with a coffee in hand.

Getting Ashore

There is no shore call at the Seaway itself — it is a transit passage, not a port.

On the Ship for the Transit

  • 1
Stay on deckThe main event is watching the ship enter the locks with only inches of clearance on each side. Upper forward decks give the best view.
  • 2
Check the transit scheduleAsk Guest Services for lock transit times — they often happen overnight or at dawn. Set an alarm if needed.
  • 3
Photo tipThe lock walls are very close and rise above you — wide-angle lenses and video work best for capturing the squeeze.

💡 Pro move: Most St. Lawrence itineraries combine this transit with calls at Montreal, Quebec City, Kingston, or the Thousand Islands — check your itinerary for those individual stops.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

There are no cruise piers on the Seaway itself; ships transit the locks while underway.

Insider Tips

  • Don't sleep through the locks. Ask Guest Services for lock transit times when you board — many happen at night or early morning. Set an alarm.
  • 💵
Two currencies, one trip. Canadian dollars used in Quebec and Ontario ports; US dollars at American stops like Clayton, NY or the Thousand Islands. Cards accepted everywhere.
  • 🍂
Fall sailings are exceptional. September–October foliage along the river is world-class. Summer sailings are warm but miss the colour show.
  • 🧥
Layer up on deck. River breezes are cold even in July, especially during early-morning lock transits. Bring a windproof jacket.
  • 🗣️
Say bonjour in Quebec. French is the official language in Quebec ports. A simple 'bonjour' and 'merci' goes a long way — English is spoken everywhere in tourism.

Getting Around
