Insider Tips

  • 💵
USD is king. Eastern Caribbean Dollars are the official currency but US dollars are accepted almost everywhere at a roughly 2.7:1 rate. Change is given in EC dollars — use them up before you leave.
  • 🚕
Negotiate taxis before you board. Rates are regulated but not metered. Agree on the price upfront. Shared taxis (route taxis) to beaches cost less but run on their own schedule.
  • 🏖️
Fort James Beach is the easy beach call. Only a $5-8 USD taxi ride from the pier, it's calm, quiet, and uncrowded compared to excursion beaches — perfect if you just want sand and a swim.
  • ⚠️
No camo, ever. Antigua law prohibits civilians from wearing camouflage clothing or accessories. It's strictly enforced and applies to children too — leave any camo gear on board.
  • 🕐
Book Nelson's Dockyard early. It's about 30-40 minutes from St. John's and worth at least 2 hours on site. Combined with Shirley Heights, it fills a half-day — plan it as a morning activity to beat afternoon heat and crowds.
