Getting Ashore

  • 1
Tender to Government DockShips anchor offshore and run tender boats to the Government Dock. Collect your tender ticket early; queues can build mid-morning.
  • 2
Rent a golf cart right at the dockGolf cart rentals (Harbourside and others) are steps from the tender landing — around $50–70 USD for the day. Highly recommended; the whole island is explorable in minutes.
  • 3
Walk or ride to North BeachIt's a straight 10–15 minute walk across the island's width, or a 3-minute golf cart ride. No need for taxis.

💡 Pro move: Sunday visits: Spanish Wells is a deeply religious community. Most shops, golf cart rentals, and restaurants close on Sundays. If your call is on a Sunday, book a ship-sponsored excursion before sailing.

Insider Tips

  • 🚫
Sunday closures are real. If your ship calls on a Sunday, most everything will be shut — shops, golf cart rentals, most restaurants. Pre-book a ship excursion before sailing.
  • 🛺
Rent the golf cart. At $50–70/day, it's the best money you'll spend. Cars are rare here; carts are how everyone gets around.
  • 💵
Bring cash. US dollars work everywhere 1:1 with the Bahamian dollar, but small vendors and cart rentals may not take cards.
  • 🦞
Order the lobster. Spanish Wells is the Lobster Capital of the Bahamas — the catch is local, fresh, and priced fairly. Try The Shipyard on the east end of the island.
  • 🌊
Check the tide for sandbars. North Beach's sandbars are most dramatic at low tide. Check a tide chart the night before so you can time your visit.
