Getting Ashore

Cruise ships dock directly at the historic Marine Station — a Soviet Empire-style masterpiece with a 71-meter spire — placing you steps from the waterfront promenade.

Getting Ashore in Sochi

  • 1
Disembark at the Marine StationShips tie up at the Sochi Seaport passenger terminal (Morskoy Vokzal). Two berths handle vessels up to 220m. The terminal building itself (1955) houses boutiques and restaurants — it's worth a look before heading out.
  • 2
Sort your visa situation firstIf you're on a licensed ship-organized shore excursion, you can go ashore without a visa for up to 72 hours. Independent exploration requires a Russian visa obtained before departure. This is strictly enforced.
  • 3
Get rubles in cashWestern Visa, Mastercard, and Amex cards do not function in Russia due to sanctions. Bring USD or EUR and exchange at a bank near the port, or use a UnionPay card. Apple Pay and Google Pay do not work either.
  • 4
Getting aroundYandex Go (Russian Uber equivalent) is cheap and reliable — download it and set payment to cash. The Lastochka train from Sochi Central Station (1.5 km from port) is the best way to reach Olympic Park or the mountains without traffic.

💡 Pro move: ⚠️ Since 2022, major Western cruise lines have suspended Sochi calls due to geopolitical tensions and Black Sea safety concerns. Current cruise traffic is mainly Russian domestic lines (Astoria Grande) and regional operators.

Insider Tips

  • 💳
Cash only — seriously. Western-issued Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Apple Pay, and Google Pay do not work anywhere in Russia. Bring USD or EUR to exchange for rubles at a bank near the port. UnionPay cards may work but acceptance is inconsistent.
  • 🛂
Visa rule: You can go ashore visa-free only if you stay with a licensed ship-organized excursion group. Independent exploration — even a solo walk — technically requires a pre-arranged Russian visa.
  • 🚂
Take the Lastochka train to avoid traffic. Sochi Central Station is 1.5 km from the port; modern high-speed trains reach Olympic Park in ~30 min and Krasnaya Polyana mountains in ~1 hour. Far cheaper and faster than taxis in summer traffic.
  • 🍽️
Eat Caucasian food. Georgian-influenced dishes dominate here: khachapuri (cheese-filled bread), khinkali (broth dumplings), and shashlik (grilled skewers). Barabulka (fried red mullet) is the local Black Sea fish specialty — tiny, eaten whole.
  • 🏖️
Beaches are pebble, not sand. The Black Sea here has rocky shingle shores. Mayak Beach right by the port has been renovated with wooden decking and sun beds. The water is warm, clear, and very buoyant.
