  • 1
Tender to the pierLarge ships anchor and run tenders to the main quay. Expedition and smaller vessels (under ~150 m) may dock directly at the industrial wharf, about a 10-min walk uphill to town.

Insider Tips

  • 🐕
Never touch the sled dogs. They are working animals, not pets. Do not approach, feed, or pet adults — they can be aggressive. Even cute loose puppies should be left alone.
  • 🧥
Dress in windproof layers. Even on sunny summer days, temperatures drop sharply when the wind picks up. Waterproof jacket and sturdy grip shoes are essential — the harbor area is rocky.
  • 💵
Bring DKK cash for artisans. Cards are accepted in shops and the hotel, but local carvers selling bone, soapstone, and ivory work near the harbor prefer cash.
  • 📵
Turn off data roaming. Greenland's internet is satellite-based and very expensive. Disable roaming before arrival to avoid surprise charges. Treat it as a digital detox day.
  • 🦟
Bring insect repellent (July–August). Arctic midges and mosquitoes can be relentless in midsummer. High-DEET repellent and a head net make outdoor time far more pleasant.
