Getting Ashore

Tenders land at Porto Vecchio — the old harbor — placing you within easy walking distance of the entire city center.

Getting Ashore in San Remo

  • 1
Tender ashoreTenders run continuously to the mole at Porto Vecchio. The process is usually quick; the bay is sheltered. Collect a tender ticket onboard if required.
  • 2
Walk to the centerFrom the tender landing, Via Nino Bixio and the streets around Piazza Colombo lead you into the city in 5–10 minutes on flat, easy pavement. The main shopping street Via Matteotti is straight ahead.
  • 3
Head up to La PignaFor the medieval quarter, walk 10 minutes to the base of the old town hill, then climb the stepped alleyways — wear comfortable shoes, it's steep and the paving stones are uneven.
  • 4
Taxis & bikesTaxis queue near the old port — agree a price before getting in for longer trips. Bike rentals (€10–15/day) are available near the port for the coastal cycling path.

💡 Pro move: All aboard times are strict — if doing a DIY train trip to Monaco or Nice, allow generous buffer for Italian/French train delays.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Large cruise ships anchor in the bay and tender to Porto Vecchio; smaller ships dock at Porto Sole just west of the old port.

Insider Tips

  • Tender logistics: The bay is sheltered, so tendering is usually smooth. Arrive at the tender dock early if you have a tour or train reservation.
  • 🕐
Siesta hours: Many small shops and family restaurants close 12:30–3:30 PM. Chain stores on Via Matteotti stay open. Plan sightseeing around this rhythm.
  • 🚆
Monaco/Nice by train: Totally doable DIY — walk 15 mins to Sanremo station (inside a mountain tunnel with long moving walkways). Take train to Ventimiglia, transfer to French TER. Allow 3+ hrs buffer before all-aboard.
  • 🍕
Local dish — sardenaira: Sanremo's signature thick-crusted pizza with tomato, garlic, capers, olives, and anchovies (no cheese). Grab a slice from any bakery near the Mercato Annonario.
  • 🌸
Flowers: San Remo supplies flowers to the Vatican for Easter and to the Nobel Prize ceremony. The early-morning Mercato dei Fiori is worth a look if your call starts early.
