Insider Tips

  • 💵
USD accepted everywhere. US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas. Keep small bills ($1, $5, $10) handy — change will be given in Dominican Pesos. ATMs are available in town.
  • Tender queues get long. Board early or wait until late morning for the rush to die down. Missing the last tender is a real risk — know your ship's all-aboard time and build in buffer.
  • 🤝
Expect the hustle at the pier. Tour guides, taxi drivers, and vendors will approach immediately. A firm but polite 'No, gracias' works. Have a plan before you step off the tender.
  • 🐋
Whale watching is seasonal. Humpbacks are in the bay mid-January through late March only. If you're here outside those months, don't book whale watching tours — they won't see whales.
  • 🌿
Pack for the jungle. For El Limón or Los Haitises, bring insect repellent, water shoes, and a change of clothes. Trails can be very muddy after rain.

Getting Around

Transport options from the pier — taxis, shuttles, transit passes, and whether ride-share apps work here.

🚍 Hop-on hop-off: ❌ No HOHO bus

🚶 Walk

Free

The cruise pier is located right in the heart of Samaná town. Most waterfront restaurants, shops, and the malecón are within easy walking distance of the port gate.

🚕 Taxi

$3–5 USD

Official taxis wait just outside the port and charge roughly $3–5 USD to the town center (5–10 min). Always agree on the fare before getting in; small USD or Dominican peso bills are helpful.

🏍️ Motoconcho (motorcycle taxi)

50–100 DOP (~$1–2 USD)

Motoconchos are the local go-to for short hops around town. They are very cheap but offer no seat belt or helmet in most cases — use at your own comfort level.

🚐 Guagua (shared minibus)

~50 DOP (~$1 USD)

Shared guaguas run fixed routes around the Samaná peninsula and are extremely affordable. They can be crowded and do not run on strict schedules, but are a great budget option for independent explorers.

🚌 Shore excursion bus

$20–45 USD per person

Air-conditioned organized tours depart from the pier to attractions like El Limón Waterfall, Cayo Levantado (Bacardi Island), and Los Haitises National Park. Book through your cruise line or independent operators at the port.
