Private taxis wait at Porto de Palmeira and charge roughly €30 for 1–3 people to Santa Maria (about 15 km). Agree on the fare before you set off — both Euros and Cape Verde Escudos are accepted.
Shared minibuses ("aluguers") run fixed routes across the island for very little money. Palmeira–Espargos is around €0.60 and Espargos–Santa Maria around €1.20; they leave when full, so timing is flexible.
Several rental agencies operate near Palmeira port and in Santa Maria. A rental is the most flexible way to reach Pedra de Lume, Buracona, and remote beaches at your own pace.
