Insider Tips

  • 🚂
Don't skip Völklingen. The UNESCO ironworks is the single best excursion from this port — 11 minutes by train, cheap ticket, and utterly unlike anything else on a European river cruise.
  • 🇫🇷
Franco-German flavour. Saarbrücken sits just 5 km from the French border. Menus mix German and French dishes; some locals speak both languages. Metz (France) is about an hour by train if you want to cross the border.
  • 💶
Cash is still king in many smaller Saarbrücken cafes and market stalls. ATMs are plentiful near the Hauptbahnhof and Markt.
  • 🚶
Very walkable. The old town core — Markt, castle, Ludwigskirche — is easily done on foot. Save taxi fares for Hauptbahnhof transfers if you're catching a train to Völklingen.
  • 🌧️
Dress in layers. The Saar valley can be grey and cool even in summer. A light waterproof is worth packing.
