Insider Tips

  • 🌡️
Summer heat is serious. The Douro Valley regularly hits 38–42°C in July–August. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and water before leaving the ship.
  • 🍷
Buy wine to ship, not carry. Most quintas and wine shops in Régua offer international shipping — don't struggle with heavy bottles on flights home.
  • 🍬
Try the Rebuçados. Local women sell Rebuçados da Régua — traditional honey-lemon hard candies in white paper cones — at the pier and station. Around €2–3 a bag; a genuine local treat.
  • 🚕
Taxis are your best friend. For Lamego, Galafura viewpoint, or any quinta, grab a taxi at the pier. Uber works but can be slow. Agree on a price upfront for round trips.
  • 🚂
Train to Pinhão is a bargain. The CP regional train costs around €3 each way and hugs the river the whole time — one of the most scenic short rail journeys in Europe.
