The second-largest atoll on Earth, Rangiroa is a diver's paradise where wild dolphins surf the passes, black pearls are harvested offshore, and a turquoise lagoon big enough to swallow the entire island of Tahiti glows at every horizon.
All cruise ships tender into Rangiroa — there is no dock capable of handling a cruise vessel.
💡 Pro move: Bring cash (XPF or USD/EUR at a poor rate). Card acceptance is limited to major resorts and pearl boutiques. No ATM at the pier.
Rangiroa has no cruise pier — all ships anchor inside the lagoon and tender passengers to Ohotu Wharf.
| Cruise Line | Typical Berth / Arrival | Dock or Tender |
|---|---|---|
| Most cruise lines (Paul Gauguin, Windstar, Silversea, Ponant, NCL) | Ohotu Wharf, Avatoru Islet📍 | Tendered |
| Expedition ships (Hapag-Lloyd, Scenic) | Ohotu Wharf or Tiputa side, Avatoru Islet📍 | Tendered |
Rangiroa's real magic is on (and under) the water — book lagoon and diving excursions before you arrive.
Drop into the open ocean side of Tiputa Pass and ride the incoming current through the pass into the lagoon. Expect grey reef sharks, hammerheads, manta rays, and — if you're lucky — wild dolphins swimming alongside you. For experienced divers only; the current is dangerously strong without a guide.
Find Rangiroa diving tours →A 1-hour boat ride across the lagoon leads to the Lagon Bleu — a lagoon within the lagoon, ringed by tiny coconut-fringed motus. Paddle in crystal water alongside baby blacktip reef sharks and wade on the white-sand shallows. The most iconic day trip on the atoll.
Find Blue Lagoon tours →A resident pod of bottlenose dolphins lives permanently in the pass and loves to surf the standing waves created by rushing tides. Walk 10 minutes from the tender pier to the public viewing area near the pass and watch them leap and play — completely free. Best at outgoing tide.
Find dolphin watching tours →A short boat ride from the tender pier to the shallow lagoon edge known as 'The Aquarium' (Motu Nuhi). Thousands of colorful reef fish, anemones, and blacktip reef sharks swarm in the clear water. Ideal for snorkelers of all levels and non-divers wanting to see the marine life.
Find Rangiroa snorkeling tours →Gauguin's Pearl Farm sits in the Avatoru village area, several km west of the Tiputa-side tender wharf. Watch how black Tahitian pearls are grafted and harvested in a living tutorial — no hard sell pressure. One of the most educational and unique stops on the atoll; reach it by bike or organized tour.
Find pearl farm tours →The world's only vineyard on a coral atoll. Grapes grown on a remote motu produce white and rosé wines with a distinctive mineral quality from the coral soil. The processing facility and tasting room are in Avatoru village — bike or join a tour to reach them.
Find Rangiroa wine tasting tours →The main islet's single paved road makes for easy, flat cycling — walking is fine near the pier, but Avatoru village is too far to reach on foot.
The easiest walk on the atoll. Head east from Ohotu Wharf along the main road to the edge of Tiputa Pass. Look for the public viewing area near Relais de Joséphine pension. If the tide is going out, you have a good chance of seeing dolphins leaping in the rushing current. Return the same way.
🗺️ See full route in Maps →Walk or bike west along the main road from Ohotu Wharf to the Hotel Kia Ora Resort & Spa. Stop for a drink at their overwater bar where you can watch fish swim below your feet. The nicest accessible beach on the main islet is here — better sand than most spots on the road.
