Qaanaaq, Northwest Greenland, Greenland

One of the world's northernmost civilian settlements, Qaanaaq is a raw, authentic Inuit hunting community where icebergs ground on the beach and sled dogs outnumber people. A rare call for expedition ships only.

Getting Ashore

Ships anchor offshore in the fjord; all passengers reach town by Zodiac. Landing conditions depend on weather, swell, and sea ice — the operation can be suspended at short notice.

Culture

Qaanaaq Museum & Knud Rasmussen House

The museum occupies the historic building associated with famed polar explorer Knud Rasmussen — originally his Thule trading-station building, dismantled and re-erected in Qaanaaq. Exhibits cover the forced relocation of the Inughuit in 1953, traditional hunting tools, kayaks, and Arctic exploration artifacts. Cruise lines typically arrange for the museum to be open during calls.

Insider Tips

  • 🐕
Sled dogs are working animals — not pets. Greenlandic sled dogs are chained on the outskirts of town and can be aggressive. Keep at least 3 metres away and never approach, feed, or pet them, including puppies.
  • 💰
Bring Danish Krone (DKK) in cash. The Pilersuisoq supermarket accepts Visa/Mastercard, but local artisans selling Tupilak carvings deal in cash only. The in-store ATM frequently runs empty.
  • 🦷
Watch out for CITES rules on souvenirs. Walrus ivory and certain whale-bone carvings cannot be imported into the US, EU, or Canada. Stick to soapstone, reindeer antler, and muskox horn — or ask for a CITES certificate.
  • 🧊
Dress for 0–8°C even in July. Wind off the glacier makes it feel colder. Windproof outer layer, warm hat, and gloves are essential. Waterproof boots are mandatory for the Zodiac landing.
  • 📡
No cell service or reliable Wi-Fi. Satellite internet is extremely limited and expensive. Download offline maps before you leave the ship — and enjoy the digital detox.
