Insider Tips

  • 💵
Cash only, small bills. No ATMs exist in Portobelo. Bring $1, $5, and $10 USD bills — local boats, artisan stalls, and most eateries don't take cards.
  • 🌧️
Pack for rain and heat. Portobelo sits in a tropical rainforest zone — bring a lightweight rain poncho, strong bug spray, and sunscreen regardless of forecast.
  • Tender timing matters. Lines for the return tender can build before all-aboard. Allow 30–45 minutes to get back to the dock and queue — don't cut it close.
  • Negotiate boat fares upfront. For Isla Grande or beach trips, agree on the price AND the return pickup time before you leave the dock. Shake on it.
  • 🏛️
Forts are free but fragile. Entry to the Spanish forts costs nothing, but the site is on UNESCO's Danger List — don't climb on crumbling walls or remove stones.
