Insider Tips

  • 💵
USD works, but carry TTD for street food. Rate is ~6.8 TTD per USD. Cards accepted at shops; street vendors and market stalls are cash only. ATMs are available in the terminal and downtown.
  • 🚕
Use only H-plate taxis. Official hire taxis have plates starting with 'H'. Always agree on a fare before boarding. The terminal taxi desk posts fixed rates — use it.
  • ⚠️
Stick to tourist areas. Port of Spain has elevated street crime. Stay near the Promenade, Woodford Square, and official tour routes. Avoid heading east of Charlotte Street into residential areas.
  • 🍽️
Eat Doubles — non-negotiable. Two pieces of fried bara filled with curried channa and chutneys, about $1 USD each. The quintessential Trinidadian street food you can't get anywhere else.
  • 🐦
Book Caroni early if your ship departs late. The Scarlet Ibis only flies in around 4:30 PM. If your ship stays past 7 PM, this is the shore excursion you'll remember longest.
