Getting Ashore

Cruise ships dock at Haddo Wharf, an active military and cargo port — passengers must take a ship shuttle to the exit gate before catching local transport.

Getting Ashore in Port Blair

  • 1
Shuttle to Port GateCruise lines provide a shuttle from the gangway to the port exit (~1–1.5 km through a working port). Walk-outs are not permitted through the secure zone.
  • 2
Taxis & Auto-RickshawsPrepaid taxis and auto-rickshaws wait at the gate. Hire a taxi for the full day (approx. ₹2,500–₹4,000 / $30–$50 USD) to cover all major sites, or use auto-rickshaws for shorter hops — agree on the fare before getting in.
  • 3
Indian Visa & e-VisaAll foreign nationals require a valid Indian Visa. Since July 2024, Port Blair is designated as an e-visa entry port — but confirm with your cruise line that your specific ship processes e-visas here.
  • 4
Connectivity WarningThe Andaman Islands have notoriously poor mobile and Wi-Fi connectivity. Treat this as a digital detox day and download offline maps before disembarking.
  • 5
New Official NamesIn September 2024 Port Blair was officially renamed Sri Vijaya Puram, though cruise lines, maps, and locals still widely use "Port Blair." Likewise, Ross Island is now officially Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep — you'll hear both names used interchangeably.

💡 Pro move: Carry INR cash — credit cards are rarely accepted by local taxis, auto-rickshaws, or small eateries.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

All major cruise ships dock at Haddo Wharf; a ship shuttle transfers passengers to the exit gate.

Insider Tips

  • 💵
Carry INR cash. ATMs exist in Aberdeen Bazaar but can run out of cash. Most taxis, auto-rickshaws, small restaurants, and entry fees are cash-only. Change money on the ship or draw cash before arrival if possible.
  • 🛂
Indian visa is mandatory. Since July 2024, Port Blair accepts e-visas — but verify with your cruise line, as some ships require a traditional visa sticker. Without a valid visa, you cannot disembark.
  • 📵
Expect very poor connectivity. Mobile data and Wi-Fi are unreliable across the Andamans. Download offline maps (Google Maps, Maps.me) and your day itinerary before leaving the ship.
  • 🚕
Hire a taxi for the full day. A hired taxi (₹2,500–₹4,000) covering Cellular Jail, Ross Island boat drop-off, and Corbyn's Cove is better value and less stress than piecing together individual auto-rickshaws.
  • 🦟
Mosquito repellent is essential. The Andamans are tropical and humid — pack DEET repellent and wear light long sleeves if visiting forested areas or beaches at dusk.
