Insider Tips

  • 🚫
Dry state: Gujarat has a complete alcohol ban. No drinks ashore, and ships may close bars while in port limits. Plan accordingly.
  • 👗
Dress modestly: Porbandar is conservative and deeply religious. Cover shoulders and knees at all temples and at Kirti Mandir. Slip-on shoes are easiest as you'll remove footwear often.
  • 💵
Carry rupees: ATMs are available in town but exchange a small amount on the ship or at port. Most auto-rickshaws and vendors are cash-only. Bargain with drivers — start at half the asking price.
  • 🕐
Daylight-only port: Ships must complete operations before dark. Confirm all-aboard times carefully and don't linger far from the port in the late afternoon.
  • 🦩
Birdwatchers — visit Oct–Feb: The in-city bird sanctuary draws tens of thousands of flamingoes in winter. In summer the numbers are much lower.
