Insider Tips

  • 🌦️
Pack layers and a rain jacket. The Azores weather changes fast — it can be sunny at the port and raining at Sete Cidades simultaneously. This is non-negotiable.
  • 🐋
Book whale watching early. Boats depart from the marina right next to the ship — walk 5 minutes and book on the dock — but morning departures sell out fast in summer.
  • 🚕
Negotiate taxi tours before boarding. Private taxis outside the terminal offer great-value island tours (Sete Cidades, Furnas). Agree on the full price before you get in — most drivers speak enough English.
  • 🍍
Try the local pineapple. Azorean greenhouse pineapples are sweeter and more aromatic than any you've had before — grab one at the market or visit the plantation. The pineapple liqueur makes a great souvenir.
  • 👟
Wear grippy shoes. The mosaic stone sidewalks (*calçada portuguesa*) are gorgeous but become dangerously slippery when wet — and it rains here.
