Getting Ashore

Ships anchor in Bahía de El Coco and tender passengers ashore to the town pier or the sandy beach.

Getting Ashore

  • 1
Tender from shipCollect your tender ticket on the morning of arrival. Excursion passengers typically get priority boarding. The tender ride is short (5–10 minutes) across the calm bay.
  • 2
Landing pointYou'll land at the Playas del Coco pier (Muelle) or directly on the beach in front of the Amor de Temporada boardwalk. Wear sandals or water shoes — a shallow wet landing is possible at low tide.

In townEverything in Coco is flat and walkable within 15 minutes. Red taxis wait near the beach park for trips to nearby beaches like Playa Hermosa or Playa Ocotal (10 min, ~$5–8).

Insider Tips

  • ☀️
Sunscreen and water are non-negotiable. Guanacaste sits in a tropical dry forest zone — intense sun, low humidity, and heat up to 35°C. Wear SPF 50+, a hat, and carry a refillable bottle.
  • 💵
USD accepted everywhere. You don't need to exchange money. Tip in dollars, buy ceviche in dollars. Change may come back in Colones — that's normal.
  • 🤿
Book water excursions in advance. Catamaran and dive tours from Coco sell out quickly. Pre-booking through your ship or a reputable local operator saves you a wasted morning on the pier.
  • 👟
Wear water shoes to the tender. Depending on tide, the tender may do a shallow beach landing. Flip-flops work too — just something you don't mind getting wet.
  • 🦀
Eat at a soda. Skip the tourist-facing restaurants on the strip and find a local 'soda' (family diner) for a $6–10 casado with rice, beans, fresh fish, and fried plantains. Soda La Teresita near the beach park is well regarded.
