Zip out to the 'poor man's Galápagos' — rocky islands teeming with Humboldt penguins, South American sea lions, Peruvian boobies, and thousands of cormorants. Explore the only protected marine-desert ecosystem in South America. Visit the flamingo-fringed Paracas Bay, walk the rust-red Playa Roja (red beach, colored by volcanic rock), and scan the horizon for condors. Head inland to one of the best-preserved Inca sites on Peru's coast. After arranging transport to Paracas village, begin at the El Chaco waterfront, not the General San Martín cargo terminal. Stroll the palm-lined promenade through the heart of the village. Watch pelicans dive in the bay, browse craft stalls, and settle into a cevichería for the freshest fish on the coast. This walk also passes the main square and the Huacachina-blue Paracas Bay.
After arranging transport to the El Chaco waterfront in Paracas village, walk south along El Chaco beach, a calm arc of sand sheltered by the Paracas Peninsula. The water is too cold for swimming (thank the Humboldt Current) but the views across the bay to the reserve are spectacular. Look for Chilean flamingos feeding in the shallows, especially in the morning.
The Paracas culture (800 BCE–100 CE) produced some of the finest textiles in the ancient world, and this compact museum tells their story. See elaborately embroidered funerary bundles, elongated skulls, and artifacts from the nearby Paracas necropolis. A perfect rainy-weather or mid-day heat escape.
