Getting Ashore

Ships anchor offshore and tender passengers to the pier at Puerto General San Martín, near Paracas village. From there, tour boats, taxis, and excursion coaches fan out to the islands and desert reserve.

From the tender dock to Peru's wild desert coast

  • 1
Tender to Puerto General San MartínShip tenders run continuously to the port pier at Paracas. The ride takes about 5–10 minutes. Disembarkation is usually smooth but can slow in swell; check your ship's schedule.
  • 2
Organizing your day ashoreTour desks and independent boat operators line the Paracas waterfront. Ship excursions board coaches or speedboats directly at the pier. Independent travelers can negotiate Ballestas Island tours and taxis here.
  • 3
Getting further afieldTambo Colorado is about 45 minutes inland by taxi or tour bus. Nazca Lines overflights leave from Pisco Airport (15 min away) or Nazca (~3.5 hrs south) — book well in advance if doing this independently.

💡 Pro move: The Paracas desert is intensely sunny and windy — bring sunscreen, a hat, and a light layer. Ballestas boat tours can get splashed; pack a dry bag for valuables.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

All large cruise ships anchor off Paracas and tender ashore to Puerto General San Martín. There is no deep-water cruise berth; the tender pier is the hub for all tours and transportation.

Paracas punches far above its size. You can spot wildlife rivaling the Galápagos, stand at an Inca citadel, fly over the Nazca Lines, or sip grape brandy at a local distillery — all in a single port day.

Iconic

Ballestas Islands Speedboat Tour

Zip out to the 'poor man's Galápagos' — rocky islands teeming with Humboldt penguins, South American sea lions, Peruvian boobies, and thousands of cormorants. En route, glide past the massive Candelabra geoglyph etched into a cliff face. No landing is permitted, but close-up views from the boat are extraordinary.

Paracas National Reserve

Explore the only protected marine-desert ecosystem in South America. Visit the flamingo-fringed Paracas Bay, walk the rust-red Playa Roja (red beach, colored by volcanic rock), and scan the horizon for condors. The reserve's dramatic landscape — where Andean desert drops straight into the Pacific — is unlike anywhere else on earth.

History

Tambo Colorado Inca Administrative Center

Head inland to one of the best-preserved Inca sites on Peru's coast. Tambo Colorado served as a royal tambo (waystation) on the Qhapaq Ñan — the great Inca road — and retains vivid ochre, red, and white painted walls. A knowledgeable guide brings the pre-Columbian history of this desert outpost to life.

Self-Guided Walks & Hikes

Paracas village is small but charming, with a pleasant malecón, seafood restaurants, and a natural history museum. The real 'walks' here are more like short explorations — but each one delivers stunning desert-meets-ocean scenery.

Paracas Malecón & Waterfront

1–2 km · Flat · 30–45 min

Stroll the palm-lined waterfront promenade from the tender pier through the heart of Paracas village. Watch pelicans dive in the bay, browse craft stalls, and settle into a cevichería for the freshest fish on the coast. This walk also passes the main square and the Huacachina-blue Paracas Bay.

El Chaco Beach & Paracas Bay

2 km · Easy · 45 min

Walk south from the pier along El Chaco beach, a calm arc of sand sheltered by the Paracas Peninsula. The water is too cold for swimming (thank the Humboldt Current) but the views across the bay to the reserve are spectacular. Look for Chilean flamingos feeding in the shallows, especially in the morning.

Insider Tips

  • 🤿
Book your Ballestas Islands boat tour early — either through the ship or at the pier on arrival. Morning tours have calmer seas and better wildlife activity.
  • 💱
Carry small Peruvian Sol notes (PEN). Independent taxis, market vendors, and small restaurants rarely accept credit cards or USD. Shipboard currency exchange or an ATM near the pier is your best bet.
  • ☀️
The Paracas desert is one of the driest places on earth — UV is brutal year-round. Apply SPF 50+, wear a hat, and bring sunglasses. The wind kicks up sand in the afternoon.
  • 🐧
Ballestas Islands visits are boat-only — no landing is allowed. Binoculars make a huge difference for spotting penguins and sea lions up close from the water.
  • 🍽️
Don't skip the ceviche. Paracas sits on one of the world's richest fisheries — local leche de tigre (tiger's milk marinade) ceviche is cheaper, fresher, and better than anything you'll find on the ship.

Getting Around

Transport options from the pier — taxis, shuttles, transit passes, and whether ride-share apps work here.

🚍 Hop-on hop-off: ❌ No HOHO bus

🚕 Taxi to Paracas Town

~$80 USD one-way

Private taxis are available at the Puerto San Martín pier to transfer passengers to the resort town of Paracas (~15 km, 20 min). Negotiate the fare before departing; pier taxis typically charge around $80 one-way.

🚕 Taxi to Pisco City

~$160 USD round-trip

Pisco city is ~35 km (40 min) from the port. A round-trip private taxi runs approximately $160 USD; agree on a wait time and return fare upfront.

🚌 Cruise Ship Shore Excursion

Varies by cruise line

Most cruise lines offer organized shore excursions including transport from the pier to Ballestas Islands boat tours and/or the Paracas National Reserve. These are the easiest option given limited public transport at this industrial port.

⛵ Independent Tour — Ballestas Islands + Paracas Reserve

$80–$100 USD/person

Independent tour operators offer combined Ballestas Islands speedboat tour plus Paracas National Reserve bus tour from $80 per person, including pier pickup/drop-off. A mandatory Ballestas Islands entrance fee (~$7 USD) is usually paid separately.

🚌 Public Bus (mototaxi to highway)

Very low cost

No public buses serve the port directly. From Paracas town, shared colectivo minivans run to Pisco city for a few soles. This option requires first reaching Paracas by taxi and is not practical for most cruise visitors on a tight schedule.
